Husband can't clear his throat-HELP

Posted by denise96 @denise96, Jan 27 5:04pm

My husband who is suffering from advanced stage 4 lung cancer and advanced COPD is having horrible trouble clearing his throat or lungs, not sure which. All day for the last two days, he has been clearing his throat and is very loud about it. Just listening to him is making me a wreck. I don't know what to tell him to do. Or how to help him with right now. The hospice nurse is coming tomorrow so hopefully she can help. We have honey and tea but no ginger. Is there something I can do until tomorrow? Even the dogs won't stay in the living room with him. Can anyone help?

I'm sorry he's going thru this
Try boiling ginger in small pot of water..when done30 min low heat, add lemon juice fr fresh lemon + honey..have him drink in sips, while warm. 6-8oz..repeat a few x a day.. Especially at bedtime. He most likely has secretions in esophagus, there are meds for this. Try my concoction. I worked Hospice 20 yrs, used this often

Thanks for the suggestion. The trouble with him is that he won't try anything like that. He wants it to go away but anything I suggest,he says NO, He is drinking some water now but I get so frustrated with him, He refuses to drink tea etc becuas he does not like it. So i guess he will just have to go on clearing his throat very loudly and drive me crazy in the meantime, I am getting so tired of his refusal to try anything new. Just listening to this continuos throat clearing is so nerve wrackin, that I just took a half of a xanax. I can[t stand it.

Talk to his Dr or Respiratory Therapist about getting a vibrating vest. My mother had that issue & during her therapy she'd use it. It helped her and she hasn't needed it in several months but if the trouble comes back we have an order to purchase a vest for Home Use.

Thanks. I never heard of a vibrating vest. But I will be sure to ask about one the next time this happens. Since he is now involved with hospice, he no longer has a respiratory therapist or pcp. They take care of everything. I will ask them about it next week.
