How to Wean Off MiraLax
I've been on MiraLAX every day for several (5-ish) years and am anxious to get my system functioning naturally again if possible. I tried really hard to wean off of MiraLAX last year and dropped down from 2 caps to 1 and 7/8 caps per day but then had to stop; decreasing any further felt like picking a day to be sick. In the past few weeks, I've attempted to replace MiraLAX with magnesium citrate and the magnesium citrate helps with my motility sometimes but does not soften my stool much. I'm down to 1 and 3/8 caps per day and it seems like I may be stuck there again. Anyone else been there? Is there hope for weaning off?

I'm 71. Fiber destroyed my digestion. I went to a Gastro for hemorrhoids, and she did banding (which I found painful) and told me to eat more fiber. She never asked how much fiber I was already eating and I was already eating a lot. I did as instructed, and got onto a bad cycle of more fiber, more hemorrhoids, more bandings. The last time injured me permanently, causing anal stricture, and I was on my own. I did the research and devised my own protocol, which I confirmed with my PCP. Now, I'm on a very low fiber diet. I use Miralax three days, then magnesium three days, back and forth. I miss my fruits and veggies, but anal stricture can be a serious problem necessitating surgery and I want to avoid that. Fiber has become a kind of cure-all mantra on the internet, but too much fiber can cause harm.
In short, if miralax is working for you, don't be afraid of it. Best wishes and good health to all.

1 ReactionThank you so much! I've eaten lots and lots of fiber too, for about 15 years as my husband was diagnosed with diabetes and wanted to stay off multiple meds for as long as possible. So we did the fiber to keep the sugars nice and on an even keel. It worked for that but for my bowel it has become a problem. I didn't realize certain "good-for-you" foods can cause gut issues in some of us. I appreciate you sharing your protocol as its similar to what works for me, with a couple of tweaks I hadn't thought of 🙂 I feel more confident I am on the right track! Wishing you good health also!
@noelles Thank you for the reminder of acupuncture. I've used it for many things but never constipation. i'll make an appointment today. I've been on a combination nightly of Miralax, Sennakot and an Chinese herb. I often have diarrhea which is preferable to me than being constipated. That being said, I still have times ( like right now) when I get constipated. I have struggled with this since I was five years old. Today I'm wondering how much of the pain I have right now is from the Miralax etc., and how much is constipation. I have ended up in the ER three times with extreme pain all three times to be told I have a lot of stool in my bowel. One time close to an obstruction. I am a vegan. I eat vegetable, oats, beans, lentils and some chocolate. Over my lifetime I have tried everything I hear talked about without result. Any fiber makes my constipation worse. I do take magnesium every night for general health. I feel kind of despondent about it. My most recent GI doc told me that what i'm taking is okay because it is pretty benign, but everything I read says the opposite. I get afraid I've damaged my motility and peristalsis. I really appreciate this place ot talk about it. i'm off to make an acupuncture appointment.

4 Reactions@juliefiona I am using a probiotic called Floracor-GI, recommended by Stanford for my grandson’s ulcerative colitis. Also Triphala, a natural stool softener. My GI Doc told me not to use solace

2 ReactionsThanks noelles, I will look into these. He told you not to use solace? What is that?
@juliefiona I am wary of theories that diet can solve serious chronic constipation, due to my experiences, however I can say that fat in the diet made a difference for me. I eat a healthy diet, but I noticed that after stubborn constipation a fried fish sandwich had amazing results. Now I eat healthy fats, but occasionally have a piece of fried fish or chicken.
I also discovered that my emotional health was related to my constipation. Distancing myself from a certain stress helped tremendously.

Sorry for your plight. But can a vegan avoid fiber? You’re backed up with dietary sludge. Hard to digest and loathe to move on down the canal. Yet TV commercial urge us to take in MORE fiber to stop constipation. Okay but drink a ton of water. I pray that this improves no matter what works.
I have had the same problem.I feel like your story is mine. I am 78 years old. And recently found out I have a severe torturous: and the 2 sphincter muscles have not been working correctly. I went to a surgeon, and I had a procedure done
Where botots was injected into this finter, muscle and dilation was done. It's a little bit better, and I am also doing active.
Pelvic floor exercises. There has been some improvement. No doctor up until last august has ever told me that I had these two physical problems going on in my colon and sphincter muscles

2 Reactions@juliefiona i have found that loading up on fiber in an effort to go, can actually make things worse…blockages are painful, awful— and if they burst in the gut, that’s dangerous…i messaged my team when it felt quite bad and they got my resection surgery moved up a week..caught it before things went really bad. Our bodies tell us a lot ! Best of luck !
