How to treat possible infection?

Posted by gbear1953 @gbear1953, Nov 14 5:09pm

I have had LD for a few years but thought it was from my Afib but my echos proved it was not. I was given a script for socks but I actually have such a bad back, knee and other issues that putting on socks is just not possible. I have used the machine and I work out almost daily so swelling is not bad however my question is about infection.
Sometimes fluid builds into thin skinned sacks that burst and recently have been leaking and yucky! Now it is burning and bleeding.
Should I just lightly bandage or should I get antibiotic treatment?
See my primary Thursday the 20th (Hope she does not send me to a waiting list to see specialist (he diagnosed and prescribed socks and machine but not much else)

Thanks BTW I had radiation SBRT for prostate cancer in case it is related

@gbear1953, I too struggled with the compression socks until I found some with side zippers that were available on Amazon. I'm glad to see that you have an upcoming appointment soon to have the infection checked. You might want to call your primary care to ask for their recommendation on bandaging the area that is leaking and/or using an antibiotic treatment while you wait for the appointment. They would have a better idea since they are aware of your medical condition.

Are you able to call your doctor for suggestions on what you should do until you have your appointment?

I cannot bend to get socks on let alone socks that are this hard to even get over my toes. All Winter I go without socks but if we have a dress up event, I will have my wife assist.
I used antibiotic ointment and soaked in Epsom salts and the oozing stopped and infection like symptoms have stopped.

Go to the ER of a major hospital immediately. This is an emergency.

I keep an emergency supply of antibiotics. At the first sign of infection, I start this antibiotic and call my PCP. I have had fibriotic lymphedema in my arm for 12 years following radiation. I have had numerous infections of cellulitis, many of which have become septic. A septic infection takes a minimum of 4 days to treat. Please do. Not wait. Has it ever been cultured? I would suggest that so antibiotics will be chosen carefully for succe#s.

I've got these before. I soaked in Epsom salt used bacitracin and put sterile bandages on
It's already dried out and less painful. I worked in hospital and have been in RN school but had to drop because of disability. I know what is serious and this stops short. I was hoping to hear about specific ointments antibiotics etc.. that people have tried.
In Manhattan and not spending a day in the ER I see primary this week

@texgrand6 thank you
I've been treating it with self care Epsom salt and clean bandage but I was hoping doctor will prescribe antibiotics so if or when it's infected I can start treating it.
I take a water pill sparsely and it helps a little but read it might not work for LD
Sucks that it just doesn't want to heal and have these flares

Lymphedema does not heal. I have Had specialized therapy and keep antibiotics on hand to start treatment in case it starts. You need therapeutic help to control swelling. Google the Lymphedema Network and seek information for therapists and/or clinics near you.

@gbear1953 , my doctor prescribed cephalafaxin. I use a combination of essential oils to promote lymph circulation. They help some. Nothing short of bandaging and MID massage only help to maintain.

Thank you both
I however disagree with the healing because mine flares up and with Epsom salt and dry bandages, they do heal but of course never 100% there is always redness or the like. It can stay under control for weeks then out of the blue I'll start oozing lymph fluid or get blisters which eventually burst and it's yucky again.
Again I'd like to know what works as far as creams and antibiotics. I do use the machine now and again but swelling is not a big issue as much as the blisters.

Saw my primary and she took a swab but that was four days ago and I have not seen the lab results
In any case, it had scabbed over and seems ok
Now I am trying the machine again. It is cumbersome but I will try
Wrapped in in a pink bandage I saw on Amazon that has zinc oxide and calamine and kept it on two days. Very had to wrap however with my bad knee hip and back
feet seem to have the worst of it and they look like Flintstone feet. I am now a size 16 shoe mostly from swelling
I am thinking this crap is chronic and something I must live with. My main issue is the weeping sore that just does not want to heal or heals only to come back
I sent message to my PA hope to see results but do not think it was infected as it scabbed up
