How to reduce synovial cysts

Posted by gfbarch @gfbarch, Jan 28, 2024

With the onset of PMR I developed a number of synovial cysts--many being on my hands. They are quite painful. Any recommendations for reducing their size?

Thanks for your reply, that is so amazing that your cyst shrunk and got reabsorbed. I’ve read this is a rare occurrence and from what I read online I think there’s just a few cases.

I hope that it won’t come back.

The "spontaneous" reabsorption of a symptomatic synovial cyst is considered a rare event. I don't know if it was spontaneous because I think the biologic I take called Actemra (tocilizumab) decreased the inflammation that caused the synovial cyst to form. This rare event was even more reason for why my rheumatologist is reluctant to ever discontinue Actemra.

Hello @dadcue , it is a miracle and I hope I get that miracle too. I hv started an anti inflammatory diet, resting, short walks & engaging my core exercises. Yesterday, I experienced less pain. I think the key is to reduce inflammation. I’m hopeful 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I had a synovial cyst which had calcified and was sitting on my spinal cord removed. I got to the point where I could only walk with my hands on my knees. My highly regarded neurosurgeon at Mayo would not see me unless the following has been tried and didn't work: PT including exercises and electrical stimulation, etc, medications, at least 3 cortisone shots, imaging, and pain management. The MRI at Mayo was repeated and luckily the right skilled neurosurgeon could remove it. Most times I'm 100% better.

Hi, I also hv a synovial cyst on my L4/L5. The pain was excruciating and was so painful to walk that I was in bed all the time. while waiting for the appt with a spine & ortho surgeon my GP gave me a prescription of Lyrica, 75mg 2x daily. It actually helped relieve the pain after taking it for 2 weeks. The spine surgeon advised a conservative approach and I had an epidural nerve block injection a week ago. I wasn’t in pain anymore (I think because of the Lyrica) but I still went on to get the injection. I’m seeing my GP this week and will see if I can stop taking Lyrica.
