How to address swelling
What strategies have you found to be most effective in addressing water retention in the legs? My husband’s right leg is taunt to the touch. He’s also develop a” bubble “ on his right side between the bottom of his hips and the top of his hip. The site is also tight feeling.
No pain. Just feels tight.
Pressure socks. Foot elevated.
Still an issue.
He’s on TPN and hydration, and needs those to keep his kidneys working. No clots.
Drs unsure what to do so have done nothing.
There is pressure on his vena cava which is adding to the situation.
Please share what you do to address this.

My husband had bad swelling in his legs and feet, drs did nothing, now that he’s in hospice care they gave him water pills . At first I didn’t think they were helping ( took a good week) , 1 shin even started leaking the water out his skin was so taunt . All back to normal so we stopped the water pils . It’s been my longest experience (especially with the VA) you really have to be a strong advocate and make them listen
Good luck 🙏🏻
That is such a relief for your husband. The relief he must feel is overwhelming.
The doctors talked about water pills but my husband also gets dehydrated. They weren't sure how to achieve a balance and at the hospital, they did not give him fluids. His pee turned tea-color.
Now that we're back home and he's getting his TPN and 500 ml of hydration as well, his kidneys are back to normal. They were saying the urine color was from the cancer in his liver, potentially, but they were wrong about that. He was just so dehydrated...
Yes, being an advocate is a full-time, difficult job. My husband has really stepped up when it comes to saying NO, which I respect.
I do wonder if there is a balance where he takes water pills to get out what's in there, while still receiving the hydration, with the timing being the critical piece.
New week, new challenge. Making phone calls on Monday.
Thank you again, and I wish you strength.
@george544, that is a fine balance to have to navigate between swelling and dehydration. How are your husband's legs now. What helped?
