How Long For Body To "Reset"?

Posted by formisc @formisc, Jan 25, 2024

Hi, everyone! I am new to this forum and this is my first post although i have been reading through the various threads in the Osteoporosis group for a few weeks now and learnt a whole lot

Some background - I am in my mid-60s with no prior fragility fractures. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis with TScore of -2.7 for femur neck in mid-2022 and my doctor put me on Prolia which i (regrettably) accepted without any prior research. While on Prolia, i started reading up on the condition and the various meds. After my 3rd injection, it became clear to me that i should not have started on Prolia (which supposedly should only be prescribed if other less potent meds do not work). If anything, i read that the right sequence should have been to start with an anabolic and then follow it with an anti-resorptive. So when the time came for my 4th Prolia injection, i opted out and started on a weekly dose of Alendronate to mitigate against the dreaded rebound effect of Prolia. I have since taken 4 doses of Alendronate and other than a mild gastric and some pain near the side of my knee (which could also be due to overenthusiastic squats), it has been ok

My question is, how long will it be before my body can "reset" so that i can, if i decide to do so, commence taking an anabolic like Forteo or Tymlos from a clean slate without the disadvantages of having traces of Prolia or Alendronate still in me? Right now, it seems like a balancing act - i have to continue to take Alendronate to mitigate the rebound effect (for how long?) - but the more doses of Alendronate i take, the longer it will linger inside and affect the effectiveness of any anabolic med i take later

Any comments/insights are welcome. My prayers for everyone's good health and well being

I am on a few health forums and I usually don’t understand why folks post questions on the forum rather than asking their doctor. For various reasons, I am going to be one of those people asking folks here rather than my doctor.
I am having a difficult time understanding T-scores. Reclast has been recommended for me.
I am an active 75 year old woman. My t scores are:
Right femoral neck. -2.8 with no significant change from prior test
Lumbar spine. -2.7. with no significant change
Forearm -4.0. A significant decrease of -0.129
I feel that with these numbers the endocrinologist is cooect in recommending
Reclast. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

For what it’s worth and I’m old and crotchety at 79. In December ’23 I had a Reclast infusion with no side effects which improved my spine numbers but not my hips. My endocrinologist had my forearm scanned because at L2 on my spine the magic number always shows osteoporosis while everything else is now in osteopenia. I believe the reading there is incorrect as I have scoliosis and the location for the most severe bend is at L2. Anyway I too have -4.0 at my forearm and back in 2002 my forearm read -3.8. In the intervening years I’ve fallen off my bike and had numerous falls snow skiing (still skiing) and tripping on roots and rocks while hiking. Never have I broken an arm despite trying to break the fall with my hands. While my endocrinologist wanted a 2nd infusion in December ‘24 I decided to wait after reading the package insert suggesting a 2 yr gap tween infusions for a diagnosis of osteopenia which alligns with the TBS of my last scan. We’ll see. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. You sure didn’t sound crotchety!! My spine numbers are what I worry about the most. I am glad your numbers showed improvement. I have some scoliosis also. It seems you are not letting these issues keep you from living an active life! I hope I can do the same.
