how do u handle depression and non alcoholic fatty liver??

Posted by tisme @tisme, Mar 11 5:47am

I had nafld ( which I am still wary of). recently diagnosed with bipolar and started seeing a psychiatrist she wants me on drugs ( mood stabilisers ) I read the info on them and I say no. If I am on them any length of time and they start to upset the liver u cant just stop taking this stuff u have to come off slowly which means the damage to the liver can continue. anyone with this kind of issue??

Hi @tisme
You are wise to be wary of starting a new drug without learning as much as you can as to how it will affect your body. You are processing a lot with recently being diagnosed with bipolar, and I imagine it will take time to feel comfortable with your psychiatrist, or any new member of your care team.

I found myself in a systemic circulation problem a few years ago and it did not get better until my doctors worked together and I learned to trust them. My current treatment includes drugs and prioritized self-care practices that they all agree with. I say this to encourage you to help your doctors help you by including all in treatment decisions you make.

As you wait for others to comment I found an overview of Bipolar that may be helpful to review, if you haven’t already. I am encouraged to hear your new psychiatrist wants you to start taking mood stabilizers for your recently diagnosed bipolar. This is consistent with what Mayo Clinic states, “ Often, you'll need to start taking medicines right away to balance your moods.”

You mention being hesitant about taking drugs that may be bad for your non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (now called Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, or MASLD) I did also find information about how medication affect the liver. This may be useful if you haven’t seen it.

I am curious what you mean that you “had” liver disease. Has it gone away? Has your psychiatrist discussed benefits of taking mood stabilizers, and do you plan to discuss your concerns with the rest of the providers on your care team?
