How do I find a doctor familiar with severe chlorine exposure

Posted by lynn611 @lynn611, Apr 3 7:04pm

About 2 months ago, I was exposed to severe chlorine inhalation from a swimming pool. When tested, the pool chlorine level was 30. Should have been between 1-4. I was exposed for hours over several days.
Ultimately, I developed pneumonia and was hospitalized for 8 days.
I do have a history of childhood asthma, which hasn’t bothered me in years. I now am experiencing trouble breathing whenever I move.
My problem is that I cannot find a doctor familiar with severe chlorine exposure. The pulmonologistsI have found seem to have no idea how to treat this. I am in the Tampa area. I can travel.
Can anyone suggest a doctor? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Maybe the chlorine scarred your lungs, have you had a chest CT?

I did, and the doctors see something but they are baffled because none of them have any experience with chemical inhalation. Can’t find a doctor with experience in this area.

I think that you should maybe get referred to a lung specialist to run some tests to see how everything looks, they can further follow up with a respiratory specialist. There are experts in this field that deal with lung exposure to chemicals because it happens quite often in our world, I hope that helps you to start out with getting some well needed medical advice, best wishes to you.

@lynn611 I'm thinking you need an environmental medicine specialist to evaluate you, and these can be hard to find, so you may have to travel for care. You could start by contacting a large regional medical center or a university medical school teaching hospital.
Another resource for finding a specialist might be your state poison control center.

It would be prudent to go to one of the Centers of Excellence for Interstitial Lung Disease. Chemical pneumonitis deserves attention and expert care. So sorry you are dealing with this! That must have been such an overwhelming environment.

There is a Dr Josh Redd he is holistic maybe he can help he has Red river Heath. A few places in the west like Utah

My relative had used bleach undiluted in a man's home to clean and got pleurisy
That's the inflamation of the lung
She had to use an inhaler and it made her lungs burn so finally she was depressed and worrying. Her dr out her on anti anxiety medicine and she thought he put her on lung medicines. She had a time getting off them

She moved away and I'm nit sure how she is but she didn't take the approach to help new ber lungs early.

I would say have a cat scan maybe or x rays. Probabky the scan

There are herbs that help heal lungs. I have asthma. An herbalist out me in some years back and I stopped using the inhaler

Mullein is a good one. There is a product called clear lungs made by ridgecrest herbals

Another product is called lung bronchial, and sinus health made by natural factors. It has herbs in it and it also
has N-acetylcysteine they call that NAC

It is very good to help lung tissue.

Citrus bioflavonoids alsi help to heal. I would think a holistic Dr is better at healing. Possibly steroids to take the inflamation down but medication won't he's long term. It's good sometimes for short term but holistic Dictirs drive at healing rather than just med long term
I hope I helped some. Praying you find the dr that can help 🙏🏻🩷

Another source that you might consider is National Jewish Health/Hospital in Denver. They have been around since the late 1800's treating and concentrating on lung disease. Are you familiar with the facility?
As Sue mentioned larger regional medical center or a University affiliated medical facility....all are good sources also.
The pool store I deal with, their son had the same thing happen to him. I will try to find out what he did and who he went to. I will give you any information he can tell me.

I used to see Dr. Mehrad at UF Health in Gainesville which I believe is a Center of Excellence facility. He is an ILD specialist and excellent in doing tests and trying to find out what is going on. I think the trigger for my lung condition was also overexposure to chlorine from a hot tub. I am sensitive to chlorine and going into a pool it absorbs into my skin too. Definitely get checked out. I had a dry cough for a number of years that did not get a diagnosis until someone noticed a possible issue from an x-ray. A lot of doctors do not know how to diagnose Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis. It might take awhile to get in to see Dr. Mehrad, but you will be glad you did. I did the drive from Venice, but it was worth it. I now see Dr. Lee at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville about an hour from home now. Good luck with everything.

Hi Barbara
I’m not familiar with the Denver Hospital, but will do some research. Thanks for the information.
I’d love to know about the son. When I go into the pool store I am overwhelmed by the chlorine smell. I don’t know how these young people can work there.
I am in a waiting position now. I will be going for respiratory therapy and the have follow up X-ray and scans in a month. I suspect my lungs were burned by the chlorine since the exposure was so massive. Are you still using chlorine or have you switched to a salt water system?
