Hospital wait time: Does anyone know how long transfers take?

They are putting in a transfer for my dad tomorrow to mayo. Does anyone know if there is a wait list and how long transfers take?

@jtatum, I'm not sure if there is a wait list for transfers from a hospital to Mayo Clinic. I think you might be able to call Mayo Clinic and find out or talk with the doctors at the hospital when they put in the transfer request. Are they transferring your father to Mayo Clinic Rochester?

You might be able to call the Hospital Admissions and Transfer Center to check. It is a Rochester number and they may be able to confirm the transfer - https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/referrals/hospital-admission-and-transfers

I hope you had good news for your dad yesterday. I was listing to a radio program yesterday about MN hospital and effect of COVID. It mention many MN hospital are not accepting transfer patients because of limited resources. Most of drs that called in were from Twin Cities area.

@jtatum, Good morning. I hope that your dad will soon be on his way to Mayo. It is unfortunate that current restrictions place a limit on the supply of available beds.

12 years ago I was transferred to Mayo Rochester from the ICU in Kentucky. I had actually missed my first appointment there the prior week due to emergency hospitalization. so I was already in their system with a Mayo Clinic patient number and they already had my health records. I will skip the particular details as they do not matter here, but my transplant doctors intervened and contacted Mayo who agreed to see me if my condition stabilized. My insurance was the one who had to approval and they also made all of the transport arrangements.

According to my husband's memory the time was 3 days. First day, the idea was brought up to him for approval for them to contact Mayo. 2nd day, arrangements and insurance were being processed, and evening of 3rd day, I was transferred. I suspect that if this were to happen today, with the Covid restriction, that the time would be different.

I did a transfer a few months ago from Moffitt to Yale's Smilow because of work transfer ( and will be switching back shortly). Very important to facilitate/coordinate transfer all of medical records and imaging. Make sure they have the right insurance info, contact numbers, etc. I found that a nice squeaky wheel so I called every day, kept really good logs of who I spoke to etc. Good luck!
