HoLEP issue after 30 days recovery
I had a partial HoLEP on the medial lobe of the prostate at Jacksonville Mayo Clinic on 23 Sep 2025. It was a great experience considering the circumstances. The Mayo Clinic is pro-patient and Dr. Dora is the best. The catheter was removed day after surgery. I was unable to urinate and had to stay on catheter for several more days. No surprise. After the urolift procedure 4 years ago, I learned my urethra swells easily. I had no complications for the next 30 days, but I did notice the urine flow was slowing down somewhat, and I had to force it to start occasionally. The flow was still 10 times better that before surgery, so I had no complaints. Then at 11 pm Saturday night on day 32, I got up to urinate, and couldn't. Not a drop. I woke my wife, and we went to the emergency room at the local hospital. The first catheter the nurse inserted had a soft end. He could not get it past whatever the obstacle was. He pulled it out and ordered a stronger tip catheter. Meanwhile some blood flowed out. I tried to urinate, and after some more drops of blood came out, there was a small amount of urine. I kept trying to urinate over the next hour about every ten minutes. Each time a few drops of blood then a small amount of urine. Finally, I told the nurse to catheterize me, which he did, and surprisingly it went in fairly smoothly. The following Monday morning (these things always happen on a weekend) I contacted the Mayo Clinic. They instructed me to keep the catheter in until Wednesday, then have it removed and test urination over the next 4 to 5 hours. I didn't quite understand how keeping the catheter in a few days would resolve the blockage, but said ok. They scheduled appointments for me to remove the catheter and test for urine retained on Wednesday, but I live 5 hours away so they said I could do the procedure at my home city. Tomorrow I return to the hospital to have the catheter removed. Several hours later, if I am unable to urinate, I'll have the catheter re-inserted and then travel to Mayo for an exam with Dr. Dora. Thus far, HoLEP was definitely worthwhile. A real game changer in my opinion. And I can't say enough good things about how I was treated at the Mayo Clinic. The urology staff is fantastic. I'll be glad when the healing process is completed.
