High potassium in Stage 5 CKD and Lokelma

Posted by kitmus @kitmus, May 4, 2022

I have the above issue. Have been eating low potassium foods and am taking 9 sodium bicarbonate pills daily, but K is still too high. He has ordered Lokelma and I have yet to discuss taking it. Has anyone taken this medication that is stage 5? Website says not to?

@kitmus I had to smile when I read your post. You see, I have just the opposite issue right now, and also am in Stage 5!

Seriously, you want to be careful about high potassium levels right now. Here is a link from DaVita that talks about your situation. https://www.davita.com/diet-nutrition/articles/basics/potassium-and-chronic-kidney-disease.

Have you asked your doctor why he is wanting you to take this medication? Also, is this doctor your nephrologist? If not, you may want to look into a second opinion from a nephrologist [dr who specializes in kidney disease]. Here is what WebMD has to say about lokelma: https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-175765/lokelma-oral/details
