@stephanieann so how come no one has info on nickel. I am highly allergic to nickel yet that metal level isn't tested. How come? Pretty soon it will be full time in a wheelchair. I metal screws place as part of the THR procedure and believe nickel is to blame but as far as I know, they don't test the levels.
Does anyone have insights?

@bug3 Have you confirmed the screws in your THR are nickel? Mine are titanium, as are the screws in my knee where a new ACL was ancored.
How was it determined that the cause of issues with your THR is due to nickel allergy? Has anyone suggested removing and replacing with a glued acetabular cup?

Dr. Robert Harrison at UCSF is a toxicologist (called occupational health) with a special expertise in these issues. He monitored my Cobalt level after my revision two years ago and was very supportive. +1 (415) 353-9681

thank you

I had hip replacement in 2005. was advised to have revision over a year ago. got a second opinion and decided against it. I had no symptoms. Now my cobalt levels have gone from 30 to 50. What could I expect from this increase?????

@sueinmn, you mentioned having psoas release surgery yourself, or were you referred for it but found other solutions? I am referred for psoas release surgery but have questions about the recovery, both short term and long term, and need to find people to talk to who have had this.

@bug3 sorry about my typing. Anyhow nothing is improving. Should finally be provided info related to testing results this week. May seek review with reputable hospitals as well. This is no life at this point. TY for your inputs on this subject. I march on.

@bug3 Blood tests are metal-specific. I'm not sure if there is a test for nickel, but @jenniferhunter has a nickel sensitivity. Maybe she can help us to learn how it is identified.

@chadessa I can't remember mentioning that. I have had iliopsoas tendinitis, treated with ice, stdoid injections and PT. Never had surgery, and no recurrence as long as I keep the leg, thigh and joint strong and limber with exercise and stretching. If pain sneaks in, I also ice, several times a day, and continue stretching and moving.

My psoas is rubbing on the outside of the implant which is exposed and it is in constant spasm. The metal is deeply textured and there is a sharp rim and that has damaged my psoas and it is too risky to fix the structural part I’m told. My psoas doesn’t function well and is painful so many everyday movements are difficult. If I just walk far or fast it collapses and I fall. My right wrist was pulverized (surgeon’s word) in a fall and I had extensive surgery but it will never work properly. Post revision has been hard. Psoas release might do wonders for me but I have lots of questions to get answered before I can say go ahead. I want to talk to a second surgeon who does releases. Because previous surgeries have had unexpected consequences I am resistant to this. Just trying to find my way. Thanks for listening.
