Help! Unexplained physical and mental pain

Posted by carolien82 @carolien82, 2 days ago

My father has been healthy for over 60 years. But past few years he has strange physical symptoms: sometimes he doesn't feel that much pain, sometimes, mostly at night, unbearable pain (burning, stabbing,...) in his feet, then in his legs, or thighs, hand, arms, chest, in between his eyes,... It comes with a mental state that is horrible as well. He realises he isn't himself, with anxiety (without something to be anxious about), hyperventilation, sometimes panic attacks,... Its like his nervous system is broken. And sometimes he is back to normal. He never knows when these attacks will happen. And its so scary! He is desperate, has had every kind of scan, 20 doctors, bloodwork... he did have a lyme infection, but doctors say it cannot be Lyme. They think 'it's all in the head', but he is so strong, he want to live, isnt depressed, it's like something is 'grabbing' him as he explains. Sometimes the night is ok, but most of the times he is crawling around from pain. This needs to stop! Is there someone who recognizes this?

Could this potentially be a severe form of CRPS? Doctors often look past this and misdiagnose or not at all. It sounds very similar, but it also could be two things interfering with each other, or maybe not even CRPS at all. I'm not an MD, so I would find a neurologist and/or pain specialist to dig further in - but, I do have pretty severe CRPS myself mixed with neuropathies that can make flare periods pretty horrible. What you're describing sounds similar to some bad flares I've had in the past. I'd be writhing in pain, pacing the halls, couldn't sleep, anxiety skyrocketed and I'd be pleading for it to stop. I can't explain why they always happen that way or that bad, but they do sometimes. Many other flares are tolerable. But, the "altered" (not exactly the right word here) mental state is what's scary. I wish I could make this better for you ... I really do. Please keep us posted. If I think of anything else, I will share it here. Sending good thoughts and hugs your way!

@carolien82 The other thing I was just thinking about was this: could this be a heart rhythm problem? Sometimes those have nasty ripple effects. Also, what about medication effects? Just thinking ....

I the past 6 months I've me two different people who have had long term Lymes that went untreated. Both wound up paralyzed. Then they each found a Lymes specialist who gave them high powered antibiotics. Both recovered. Don't dismiss...don't let your doctors dismiss the Lymes. The treatment is not going to hurt your Dad if it winds up being something else. It may be worth a try.
