Heart and Liver Transplant evaluation at Mayo Phoenix

Posted by pjw51 @pjw51, 1 day ago

Hello. This is my first post. I’m Paula. My husband is going tomorrow 4-11-26 for his evaluation. I have a lot of questions and will be patiently waiting for answers from the team. Can anyone on this chat give me some evaluation process information?

Hi Paula. I am sure every case is different. For me I had liver cancer and a potential liver transplant only , not heart also. For me my ins. co & local Drs recommended me to Mayo for a liver transplant. Mayo had them test me locally with a ton of tests and send Mayo the results. The local testing took about 2 months. After seeing the results Mayo asked me to come down to AZ and test with them. That took about a week. Then they added me to the transplant list. If he is already seeing them tomorrow you are already ahead of my schedule. For testing it was about a week in AZ but that was for liver only. Best of luck.

Hi Paula,
Had my evaluation at Mayo starting December 30, 2024 and received liver on February 6, 2025. It is a smooth week, first day I started with labs, nutritionist, chest X-ray, nurse consultation and then the head of the transplant center, Dr Aquel. Dr. Aquel pretty much gave me the good news that first day. Tuesday I had an echocardiogram and a visit with a social worker. Wednesday was New Years and then Thursday I saw an anesthesiologist, surgeon and gastroenterologist. I got the official go ahead the next week.
While you are there I would highly recommend looking at the Help and Healing Home center behind the hospital. You will be there for a while after the transplant. It is a 2 minute drive to the hospital, very peacefull and you will meet people that are going through the same thing. There is so much to see and do in the area and the dinning options in Scottsdale is unmatched. Especially Butters Pancakes for breakfast, just a mile from the hospital.

@pjrace Totally trivial compared to what is going on but as a distraction to get away for an hour. I loved Gramaldis Pizza (several locations in Scottsdale) and my wife liked the blueberry pancakes in the Mayo cafeteria build. 3. Hope the first day went well yesterday. (---:
