Hearing Heart Beat In Left Ear: What is the cause?
I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease in 2016 to my left ear. Since then my disease has been under control. In April 2021 I started to get loud ringing in my left ear and later a heart beat. Later I lost 50% of my hearing and started to get dizzy again. I went to my ear doctor where he ordered a series of MRIs and they all come back negative. After that I got a steroid shot in my ear and waiting to see if the heart beat goes away. My doctor still doesn't know why my menieres flared up or what caused the heart beat.
Has anyone else experienced these symptoms? If so, did it go away and what did you do to make it stop? What caused it?

Hi @sheideman and welcome,
Allow me to bring @beatricefay @kiki1989 @akbishop12 @kittyrushing @judyhodgern @trishanna @th1 @joyces @lioness into this discussion. Together they have experience with pulsatile tinnitus, Meniere's disease, vertigo and hearing loss and may have some suggestions as you and your doctor investigate the root cause of this flare up.

I am responding to Mayo Clinic Connect members. I have had pulsatile tinnitus for more than four years . . . a constant beating of my heart in my left ear. During this time, I have heard many sounds described that others are hearing. My tinnitus sounds like a heart beating. I guess I am fortunate that it has never stopped. I have been to an internist, two cardiologists, two otolaryngologists. One of the otolaryngologists did a scan or two but I was never able to speak to him after them or get any results. The nurse practitioner called and said that I am “fine.” Even though I did not have high blood pressure, the first cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol and Losartan and I have been on those two drugs for years and still have the unchanging, constant heartbeat. Good luck to all of you with similar problems. I hope you can find a physician to treat you. @kittyrushing
I have a very firm sponge about 4" X 3 maybe with a hole cut in it as big as my ear. I only hear my heart beat as though through a stethoscope in my left ear and didn't know it was a disease. If I rest my head on my firm little neck roll pillow on my left side I put the little sponge around my left ear and then I'm not forced to listen to my heart beat! I don't hear my heart in my right ear. I thought it was because our hearts are on the left a bit. LOL. I use a little neck roll pillow because I have a fluffy hairdo and don't want my head to sink into a big soft pillow that would ruin my hairstyle. Only people over 60 have fluffy hair styles instead of plastered to their scalp. But I would look even shorter than 5'1" if I went along with the current style. Never. ............ TexasGlenda
