Having TKR soon-recumbent or stationary upright bike?
Hi! I’m 46 and am having a Tkr on my right knee in October. I’m sooooo nervous and starting to freak out.
I’m wanting to get either a stationary upright bike or recumbent bike for my house. I’ve done so much research and it’s almost like half the articles say get a recumbent bike and the other half say get an upright stationary bike.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

One thing I learned during PT was that my balance is terrible. My neurologist just sent in a PT order for a facility that focuses on this type of problem. Given my age (81) and my balance issues, the only bike I would take on the road is a recumbent bike. But for the house either could work. At my original PT facility, for recovery from my right knee replacement, the first thing they did every time was to put me on an upright stationary bike for five minutes.
Have you identified the PT facility you intend to use during recovery? I would ask my surgeon and my PT therapist what they recommend. Your body is different, our surgeons are different, their methods are different, etc. So our recovery varies as well.
I remember six years ago when my surgeon replaced my left hip. He walked into the recovery room with a multi page document from the hospital (it looked like about 5-10 pages) with all the "don't do" caveats: don't cross your legs, etc etc. He said watch this and tossed it into the waste paper basket. he gave me a one page document essentially telling me to take my pain medicine as needed and to rest while constantly icing.
But my surgeon is the primary inventor of the minimally invasive Superpath method of doing a hip replacement. If he did a traditional method his instructions might have been different. Given the way your surgeon intends to do the procedure, which does she recommend for the recovery period? It might very well be different from advice given by another surgeon doing a different method and both could be correct.
