Having TKR soon-recumbent or stationary upright bike?
Hi! I’m 46 and am having a Tkr on my right knee in October. I’m sooooo nervous and starting to freak out.
I’m wanting to get either a stationary upright bike or recumbent bike for my house. I’ve done so much research and it’s almost like half the articles say get a recumbent bike and the other half say get an upright stationary bike.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would use recumbent. You can still peddle without the risk of pushing down too hard. Just my thoughts. Tho I am a bit lazy…ha., ha

1 ReactionRecumbent puts less pressure on the knee and the low back. It is also less difficult-- safer to get on and off.
After two to three weeks when you have recovered 100 degrees of rotation the upright might be better for strengthening. Good luck with your surgery.

1 ReactionI purchased a stationary bike and it worked fine for me. BUT
caveat: many bikes including the one I purchased have a cross bar that the user needs to step over. That might cause some problems during early recovery months.

2 ReactionsI had a recumbent bike prior to surgery at home which I still use. PT started me on a recumbent at week three and maybe at week eight they put me on a stationary bike. At week ten I was told to try getting on my bike at home and if I could easily do it I was okay to begin biking around the neighborhood again. This probably doesn’t help your decision you but it is my experience with both bikes.

3 Reactions100% recumbent. You can always do recumbent but not always upright. At 4 months, I am still using the recumbent bike at the gym and am always in a line with long-term TKRs who continue to swear by it. There’s never a wait for the upright bikes because they are so readily available. Good luck with your recovery! 😊

2 ReactionsI use the recumbent bike and it really helps "loosen" up my knee.
Prayers for the best outcome for you!

1 Reactionnance80 I’m 78 & had a TKR in 2024. My PT had me using a NuStep (recumbent elliptical) before & after my TKR. It’s such a good exercise that I bought one to use at home! While using it, I read books on my iPad & before I know it, it’s been an hour! But, you should ask your Dr & PT first.
I used a recumbent bike one month before surgery. And after surgery I bought one for home exercise. It's just another tool to keep me moving. But start without tension and build up as you get stronger. Good luck!
Hi. I had a knee replacement 18 months ago. I ride a recumbent bike everyday. I highly recommend the recumbent bike.
