Are vitamins, supplements or herbs issue with CKD?

Posted by ddon @ddon, Feb 14 7:35pm

I read oil based supplements like vitamin A and E can be stored in the body. I stopped taking fish oil capsules as well until I see my nephrologist in two weeks. What's been your experience with Vitamin supplements and or herbs? Thank you, Donna

My nephrologist checks my Vitamin D levels frequently. She initially started me on Vitamin D because I was deficient. She then has adjusted the amounts when necessary.

@bettycll thanks. I'm taking 1,000 mcg of D in my calcium, magnesium capsules and 2,000 mcg of D in my B complex and CoQ10. I was taking omega 3 1,000 mg.

I’ve researched krill oil and astragalus supplements for CKD. Has anyone had experience with taking either of these? Thanks!

@8801 Unless you are low in selenium, I would avoid the astragalus. A Brazil nut would fill the minimum. Depending on the source and plant species, there is the potential of having high levels of some heavy metals. When I was a geologist, we used astragalus princeoni for a marker for uranium (they precipitated under similar conditions). https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-963/astragalus I prefer flaxseed oil for Omega 3. Whales have enough problems without us snarfing down their krill.

@kayabbott Thanks for the heads up regarding the uncertainty of the origin of the source.
