Has anyone with axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy had a total knee re
I was just diagnosed with axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy and I am scheduled for a total knee replacement for severe osteoarthritis on Oct 27th. Has anyone had this condition and had a knee replacement? How did your recovery and knee rehab go?

Hello @sharonmarie2788, Welcome to Connect. I have small fiber peripheral neuropathy and have had my right knee replaced. I don't have pain with my neuropathy just numbness and some tingling but the knee replacement didn't make my neuropathy worse or any better. My Mayo surgeon had me focus on doing pre-surgery and post-surgery knee and leg exercises which I think really helped with my recovery process. There are many discussions on knee replacements if you want to scan through them while you wait for others to respond. I know it can be a little scary thinking about an upcoming knee replacement. Do you have any family or friends that can help you during the recovery process?

2 ReactionsThank you so much for your reply. Yes, I am fortunate that I have my husband to help me. My daughter and son both live about 2 hrs away and they will come help as well. Your experience that you shared gives me hope, so thank you. It is scary because I don't yet know what is causing it. I have my first appointment with a neurologist 6 days before my scheduled surgery. My primary care doctir ordered Vit B12, thiamine, folate, fasting blood sugar, A1C and thyroid tests which wete all normal. She said the neurologist will order more blood work and try to find out what is causing it and that sometimes no cause can be found. I did notify the surgeon's office of the new diagnosis. Hopefully he doesn't cancel the surgery as I really need it. He plans to do the right knee first and then the left in 4- 6 months. I am 64 yrs old and and now have limited mobility due to severe knee osteoarthritis and this new diagnosis with numbness in bith feet and burning in calves with some tingling in hands and forearms complicates everything. Thanks again for your supportive response!
