SPM is what our bodies make from omega-3 and omega-6 acids, frequently found in fish etc. Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators, SPM, act as "stop signals' to end the bodies' inflammation response. SPMs orchestrate the completion of the healing cycle.
The problem arises because the body makes less SPM as we age and when it is under stress.
So supplementation may become necessary, especially if like me you are suffering from a disease, covid and a reaction to a vaccine....plus being older .....it is just too much for the body to handle without some help.
So my neurologist wanted me to continue to eat my diet high in omegas (my tests showed a high level of omegas in my body already) and also to take the SPMs. SPMs seemed to help me.
"SPMs – known as Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators – act as stop signals in the inflammatory response. They also help to ‘clean up’ cellular debris from the injured area after the immune system is triggered, enhance tissue regeneration and reduce pain. SPMs are the active metabolites from EPA and DHA omega-3s biosynthesized endogenously, and are the molecules that exhibit pro-resolution activity. " https://lipinova.com/spmscience/.
Ai google description of how they work:
"The resolution of inflammation was once thought to be a passive "fading away" of symptoms, but research shows it is a highly active biological process driven by SPMs. They resolve inflammation through several key mechanisms:
1. Cessation of Attack: SPMs signal white blood cells (neutrophils) to stop invading the affected area, preventing further tissue damage.
2. Cellular "Cleanup": They activate macrophages—the body's cleanup crew—to clear out cellular debris, dead cells, and pathogens in a process called efferocytosis."

@kathleen1314 thank you! I have never heard of this! I learn something new every day on Mayo Connect - but often need anagrams “spelled out” because I am a little slow on the uptake when it comes to initials! 😊

BackBiome seems made up mainly of probiotics and is aimed at gut health.
Below is what the AI said when I asked if there was any research to back up that backbiome helps with nerve pain.
I would say that what helps with nerve pain would depend greatly on what is causing the nerve pain.
Ai:
There is no direct clinical research proving that the specific BackBiome supplement helps with nerve pain. While the company cites studies on its individual probiotic strains and internal consumer surveys, these do not constitute independent scientific validation for the product as a treatment for neuropathic pain.
Many specialists note that while probiotics are a promising area of study, they are not a proven cure for nerve damage, and standard treatments (like B vitamins or ALA) remain more common
Recent research is exploring how gut health impacts neuroinflammation and chronic pain.
1. Inflammation: Probiotics may help maintain the intestinal barrier, potentially reducing the systemic inflammation that can exacerbate nerve pain.
2. Neuropathy: Some studies suggest that gut microbiome dysbiosis (imbalance) contributes to conditions like diabetic neuropathy, and that modulating the microbiome could be a supportive tool for managing symptoms.
I have neuritis from a reaction to a vaccine. I have found that my problems seem to be caused by inflammation in the nerves. My neurologist prescribed SPM for me; SPM is used by the body to resolve inflammation. This is what our bodies produce from omega 3s; SPM is something that our body has trouble making enough of as we age and with any disease or condition. The SPM has helped me , but it has taken years for the neuritis to calm down. It will still activate with stress especially from a viral infection.
So if nerve pain is from inflammation then SPM might help. Aspirin also helped me which was one of the biggest clue to the doctors that my problem was inflammation.

Yes, I also spend a lot of time looking up anagrams here on Mayo. 🙂

I used it and it’s not working at all.

What is the "it" to which you are referring?
