Has anyone tried hyperbaric oxygen for long covid

Posted by biggt @biggt, Dec 3 11:09am

I’ve been doing a lot of research and finding that hyperbaric oxygen has been doing wonders for long Covid. It is used in Israel and UK extensively. Wondering if anyone here in this support group has gone thru this type of treatment

Interested to know where you have info. that it is used in the UK extensively for LC…can you provide details? I did a lot of research myself on this a year or two ago and will have to reply from memory, so there might be slight errors, although I did post numerous replies to a much earlier similar query on this forum. So from memory: the Israel research was with a very sophisticated 5 atmos. pressurised chamber, where they were able to control the pressure; there are few comparative hyperbaric oxygen chambers working above 4-4.5-5 atmos. most notably related to diving centres/ industry, and some hospitals. Some people have got to do research via these thus got the treatment free, others had paid, but costs could be £200-400 per session, and research has been for 20 plus sessions…. so enormously expensive. At the other level you can find HOCs at health spas where they tend to be much lower atmos. 1-2 range. Some charities, in the Uk, have them for sufferers of particular ailments, and particularly children, seem to be in 2-2.5 range, and because of their charitable nature tend to be a lot cheaper in tens of pounds. Ok if near you but obvious difficult if it’s 2+ hours away, as you might benefit from regular, daily, doses. Then there is another method in Uk which is to buy or hire a chamber from a tent-like soft structure to solid metal pods, seem to remember max.2.5 atmos., hire was a year or two ago for better pod in £500-600 range for a month, but you might find others who could share the hire with you to be able to say use it daily. I never progressed it as difficult for me to even get a trial of say 3 sessions due to distances. The research to say the benefits were from Israel, other info.seemed to be anecdotal ie might do you some good, but not obvious which LC sufferer would benefit. A US anaesthetist, Dr.Grosman, was expressing some concern that some OHC were using pure oxygen, and this is toxic, so he was showing some concern that treatment, not properly controlled by medics.might be dangerous at the 20 sessions range. Hope this gives an idea of what I found, think it is largely correct, but there might be new published research published recently that I do not know about.

It was recommended, but I cannot afford it and insurance doesn't cover.

It worked really well for a friend of mine. I tried it and my inner ears filled with fluid! I have had hearing loss since then, waiting to meet with an ear specialist which is taking some time. I suggest you meet with and Ear Nose and Throat doctor if you have any eustachian tube or inner ear issues!

Update, just found out that a LC forum I belong to had interview with Dr Amir Haddeny the Israeli scientiwho did the hyperbaric oxygen trials…they were 40 2 hour sessions over 8 weeks for pre covid patients, but thought LC might need 60 sessions! But you might like to listen or read transcript of him describing the science…go to Long Covid Podcast hosted by Jackie Baxter in Uk, episode 153, for Nov.’24.

I did 12 or so sessions at a holistic doctor's office 2 years ago and it did absolutely nothing except cost me a bunch of money. I also tries nutrient infusions for 2 months and that did nothing either except cost me even more money. That is just my experience

My son did around 30 sessions. He felt improved afterwards, but it was not durable and did nothing for his PEM. They progressively went deeper over time. I am not sure he could answer as to whether it helped his baseline. The biggest improvements he has seen for that have been with antihistamines, Eloquis, and drastically changing his diet to low histamine and minimally processed foods. Maybe Metformin a bit? He has also tried a lot of supplements and maybe the CoQ10 helps the most. But I have heard it works for some.

Yes, but the Israeli research indicates that their patients still feel improved 18 months later. See he now seems to operate same protocol , perhaps even the longer LC one, in Dubai and Miami too. Shame most LC sufferers would never get to even try it!

Yeah, he was doing it daily during the week and then on the weekends, he felt he declined. He did it long enough that I feel fairly confident to say he doesn’t think it worked much for him, but everyone is different and it manifests differently in different people.

I tried it and it made my headaches worse so I had to stop after the 3rd attempt. I started at a half hour on lower pressure as I told them I'm overly sensitive to medication/treatments. Worst 3 half hours of my life 🙁
