Has anyone tried Botox for headaches?

Posted by mikayla @mikaylar, Jan 26, 2025

Was Botox successful? My doctor wants me to try it again. It did not work 8 years ago. I worry about the toxicity and my glaucoma and macular degeneration. Eye doc says it's okay, but they aren't his eyes.

@bernieboy @mikaylar @mikkelp - Hi All….I live in NYC and just had my third round of Botox for head pains. I don’t have Migraines…I have Hypnic Headaches….In addition, I am also doing the Scrambler Technique Therapy for Trigeminal Nerve pain….basically I am a mess.
I’m reading about concerns to the eyes and now will ask my eye doctor who did my cataracts….I was told after the third episode of Botox, it gets better….Unfortunately, I’m four days past third round and I’ve been having head pains ….I’m taking 10mg of Rizatriptan every day so far…I really don’t like taking most meds unless necessary. My “go to” was Prednisone and it always worked. Unfortunately I have built up a resistance and need stronger doses plus it’s not the best medicine to take….I’m not happy having to take so much Rizatriptan right now but don’t know what else to do….My brain feels totally fried at this point.

@mikaylar I had no problems getting Botox. My neurologist is one of the best she teaches other doctors how to give the Botox shots (33). I don't know where you live but she is in Illinois. Her name is Dr. Anderson Neurologist Good luck Bernie

@bernieboy, It's not the actual injections that I struggle with, it's the botulism or whatever they put in the medication. They are too close to my eyes and I don't need any more eye problems. My retina doctor agreed.

I worry about my eyes and the toxic whatever that is in the shots.

@mikkelp I have been getting Botox for headaches for a year. At first they didn't help but after the third session the headaches became less & less. I get them every three months and so far they continue to lesson my headaches. Don't give up too soon they take time to help.

I'm currently receiving Botox for migraines, I had my second treatment on New Years Eve. The first treatment made them much worse, but they also tried to withdraw the topamax that I've been currently taking to keep them under control at the same time. From what I understand, it takes about a year of being on the Botox to reach optimum benefit... They gave me back the topamax and now they are back under control, pretty much. I also have Lupus SLE, idk if that impacts anything. I keep a daily migraine diary and I look forward to titrating down off of the topamax as I continue on with the Botox and keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, I have Botox administered for my migraines. It definitely helps, but it doesn’t completely eradicate the migraines. I take propranolol as a preventative. My rescue meds are Fioricet and Ubrelvy. I also use peppermint oil on pulse points. Plus, ice packs help me. I try to rest. They are pretty debilitating.

I also have lupus SLE. Research shows people with lupus are twice as likely to have migraines.

Thanks for the info on what helps you with your migraines, @jkss12. Are you finding the injections tolerable?
