Has anyone treated their osteoporosis without drugs?

Posted by hemigal04 @hemigal04, Sep 20 4:43pm

Hello all … I am a 68 y/o lady, 5’1 and 115lbs. I have always been petite and of small stature. I recently went to a new physician who ran a battery of tests on me, which all came back great, except for my Dexa scan which came back with a T score of -3.8. The physician immediately wanted to write me a script for Fosamax. After reading about it, I am freaked out. Here’s a bit of background on me. I have never smoked, don’t drink and am fairly active. I still work part-time and love being active. Have any of you tried to combat osteoporosis from a “natural” healing angle? I have NEVER taken any meds, gosh I never even have the need for aspirin, as I don’t experience headaches. Looking for some input from actual people. It’s way too easy for a physician to write a script as I truly believe they are in cahoots with the pharmaceutical industry. My apologies if I have upset anyone. Any information, experience or feedback you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading my post.

I had one endocrinologist tell me if I had two Reclast shots, that would be all the meds I would need forever. (I don't believe this is true.). When I said I was fearful of the side effects I've read about that drug, the Dr got very angry with me. He said I would probably fracture within the next year by something as simple as picking up a laundry basket. I am 75 and although I have severe osteoporosis, I have never fractures and have decided to be drug free for now. I can't take Foreto or Tymlos due to parathyroid issues, leaving only Evenity and a bisphosphonate (Reclast or Fosamax). Evenity is too new for me and I've read bisphosphonates don't reduce fractures very much. My new Endo Dr wants me to take Fosamax but respects my opinion to decline.

@daisy17 Yes my drs scared me also- saying I would have to be glued back together if I fractured- I am 77 very active have osteoporosis -not horrible- and had terrible side effects from Prolia and actonel. Not on anything now. Eating calcium rich foods and taking Vitamin k. I heard algae cal is good.

I suggest you all take a look at the programs offered by Save Our Bones (Vivian), Dr Judy Brown, and Pilates with Teresa.

@anna101

thanks for suggestions, Anna.
I put myself on the email list for Save our Bones Vivian.
The Pilates with Teresa looks too difficult for me.
Great of you to share ideas.
Appreciate it.

Yeup...me too..
I hear stories: this person fractured making the bed.
this other person fractured lifting a cup of tea.
This other person fractured turning in bed.

Yes it does happen, but not to everyone.
I say enough is enough.
Stop scaring us into thinking drugs is the only answer.
It might be part of the answer, but there are other
things we ought to be doing.

Age and health conditions may keep us
from doing maxium movements and exercizes.
There must be more to handling osteoporosis
through diet and supplements.

It is challenging for all of us to get this information.

Don't know if your post is Sept 20, 2025 or
2024 or..
I agree with you that it is so easy for Doctors
to recommend pharmaceuticals,
without knowing a great deal about it.

I don't have any advice, except to say,
stay curious, ask questions, evaluate the
answers for you personally, and try not to
feel pressured.

@daisy17 A friend of mine was taking Fosamax for two years and paid $22,000.00 to have jaw reconstruction. My PCP told me not to take it because it makes the wrong kind of bone. Blessings to you.

I read Fosamax stopped the bone building process so you don't lose bone, but you also don't build new bone. Your DEXA looks better but the bone you have can be fragile or brittle because it's old. Tests show I am losing bone faster than I am rebuilding it, so that is not good.

@bevlevvancouverbc I slipped on my parrots bird paper on the floor -slid on my back and voila! Nothing happened just black and blue. Then my flip flop caught on the area rug a few weeks later -fell on the tile on my knee cap-just a big bruise. There is no guarantee that the meds would prevent all this- after all when you go off prolia there are compression fractures that are very common!!! And I burned my esophagus with actonel-an ongoing problem now.

smiles are good...laughter even better..

agree with you
No guarantee that meds will prevent fractures.
Will it lessen the likelihood ? Maybe, we don't know.

Congratulations on your good health except for your DEXA scan. I can sympathize as I have had osteopenia since before age 40. I recently have become borderline for osteoporosis so my doctor put me on Fosamax. My mother-in-law had health issues but had tolerated it well for years so I decided to try it even though I’m very conservative about medications. After about 11 months on it, I experienced severe bone loss and infection in my upper jaw and lost a tooth because of it. What frightened me even more was that I had no symptoms except for a small bump on my gum that went away and then reappeared, which caused me to see my dentist. As a former assistant Manager and dental assistant, this was extremely heartbreaking. My dentist confided in me that Faso Max is the least harmful of all the osteoporosis drugs on the market and thinks the others should be banned. I now have an appointment with my endocrinologist at the end of the month to try to find an alternative. Good luck to you.

The problem is that the other "bone building" drugs that are available, must be followed by a bisphosphonate to lock-in any gains they provide.

@bocabird hi, if you do AlgaeCal, start slowly, 1 cap for a few days, then add more…I did great on 2 a day, but 3 gave me loose stools..I’m vulnerable to some kinds of magnesium, maybe because I had CRC last year…just don’t rush it all at once, as older bodies need careful use of anything we take…that said , good luck !
