Has anyone travelled to high altitudes with Bronchiectasis / MAC?
I have bronchiectasis and MAC. Currently taking the big three and arikayce. We are planning to go to Machu Picchu in January and need some advice or tips. Thanks, Nikki

I was on Arikayce in May when I went to Denver and needed supplemental oxygen. I've never needed oxygen prior to being on Arikayce. I'm from Denver and visit family and friends 2 or more times/year. I told the NJH Dr, I never needed O2 before and she thought it was the Arikayce.. Fortunately, I learned in May my MABs count was so low, that I was told I could go off all antibiotics. I returned to Denver last week (no Arikayce) and my O2 was 92-95. If I need to go back on antibiotics for MABs, I would inhale IV Amikacin, which NJH had recommends. Arikayce is highly viscous and I wouldn't be surprised if it was interfering with oxygen transfer at the alveoli's.
We're all different but if it were me, I would either reschedule, ensure I have supplemental oxygen, or try the inhaled IV Amaikacin prior to leaving. At NHH they used Aerobiaka mouthpiece with the cup, minus the flutter valve assembly.

1 ReactionThat sounds incredible! I have taken Diamox twice before, for Colorado skiing. This all gives me hope to discuss with my doctor. Thank you!
Hi
In the middle of an exacerbation this past spring, I had an appointment to travel to National Jewish.
I did an altitude, simulation test, and found I needed supplemental oxygen for the flight. Cabins are pressurized to 8000 feet.
I also found that if I was not active in Denver, I would be OK but if I was more active, I would need the supplemental oxygen.
My doctor offered the high altitude medication, but the nurse at National Jewish said it was not necessary.
I really recommend the high altitude simulation test.
I rented an oxygen concentrator approved for travel.
