Has anyone had to deal with a functional neurological disorder?

Posted by papa58 @papa58, Nov 13, 2024

My 16-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder. She keeps passing out. They’re saying mind and the Brian are gonna have to start working together again. Therapy I guess. Has anybody had any kind experience with this or any knowledge at all.

I was diagnosed with FND back in May. It is when your brain is not communicating with your nervous system and it can present in many different ways. The therapy is to retrain the brain to communicate properly. Try and find a clinic that has a program for FND. What Mayo Clinic is your granddaughter close to? Reach out to them. I will suddenly be unable to take the next step. There are times that I go into stroke like symptoms where I can't move, can't talk. It's scary. I have GI issues. It causes my blood pressure to be too low. Good luck and keep researching for help for her.

The stroke like symptoms made people get me to the ER. The doctors were sure it was a stroke even though I kept trying to explain FND. Arg!

I was standing up, singing while working on a puzzle. All of a sudden my words would not come out, and my arms were frozen in mid-air…it only lasted for about 10 seconds but that was enough.

My speech is still a problem on occasion but not body freezes.

I haven't gone to the ER since my diagnosis. They actually wrote in my medical records that they thought I needed a psychiatrist in my last trip to ER...double Arg!

FND patient here.
I was diagnosed with FND about 3 years.
A few years before my diagnosis, I was having trouble walking. I looked like I had just been riding a horse for 2 days.
The double vision was next followed by tremors, and my balance was getting worse.
Increasing fatigue, breathing difficulties, Hypersomnia, weight gain have all added to my daily misadventures.

I have fallen twice in the last 2 months and hit my face both times. Now I have TMJ because of the way I fell.

I’m 76 years old and live alone. Even though I have things in place like grab bars, walkers, and canes, I lose balance if I bend forward I fall backwards, sideways, forwards. Anyway actually.
The biggest problem and fear is getting up off the floor! The struggle is so hard. Both my knees have been replaced and kneeling (if I can) is extremely difficult. The furniture I grab onto slides on the laminate floor.

I wear an Apple Watch with fall detector. It only works when you fall and don’t move at all for a minute. Then it will ask if you are ok.

FND has changed my life forever.

So sorry, I can't imagine being alone. I tripped over something and had a HARD fall (hurt my shoulder) and laid there for several minutes before anyone came to help me. The fall triggered my whole body to become paralyzed. It was scary. I understand "FND has changed my life forever" I feel the same. I owned a business that I have shut down due to my brain just not cooperating. Kinda need good cognitive brain to be an accountant. I wish you the best and hope both of us can improve.

@lbholley I hesitate to say this, but a mental health therapist is part of the “recovery” process.

It is mentioned in everything I have read, that those of us with FND need to manage our stress. I agree. I find my tremors are much worse when I am stressed. My therapist is a very good listener and gives me “tools” so I can learn to reduce stress.
I also have bi-polar anxiety and that makes things worse.

@lbholley so sorry about your fall.

I’ve fallen twice since March. Both times I fell backwards. I hit the right side of my face and neck each time. The falls have practically broken my left jaw joint so now I have severe TMJ.
My walker was close enough but falling backwards does not make a walker useful.

I was recently diagnosed with FND with abnormal movement and have passed out, loss of consciousness, around same time frame I saw the specialist, and that was a first for me. And there’s nothing they can do for me. Please tell me how your granddaughter is? I send warm regards to you.

I have Functional Movement Disorder a subtype of FND. I've had it since October of 2024 after taking a single Sertraline tablet. I had uncontrolled arm, leg and body movements. stuttering when stressed, and an extreme startle response to unexpected sound, light or movement. I was prescribed Gabapentin and now take a 300mg capsule three times a day. The change after taking the gabapentin was quite remarkable and although I do still have occasional movements and stuttering when I am stressed, over-all I lead a fairly normal life.
