Has anyone had success with Mirtazapine?

I tried Trazodone which didn’t work so last night I tried 7.5 mg of Mirtazapine which I didn’t fall asleep on and then 7.5mg more of Mirtazapine. I felt very agitated on both dosages. I ended up taking .5 mg of Ativan and fell asleep. Has anyone else felt agitated taking Mirtazapine.

Also, I’ve tried between 25 to 50mg of Trazodone for 4-5 months. My doctor said I didn’t need to titrate off of it. Does this make sense?

I have insomnia and my doctor asked me to try Mirtazapine 7.5 mg. along with Temazepam which I take nightly.
However, when I read about Mirtzapine, it seems to me that it can be somewhat dangerous and is used for depression. I don't have depression.
What do you think?

I couldn’t take mirtazapine because it made me ravenous and side effects were not worth it. I didn’t feel any benefit from taking it. Ativan caused me problems with pain/difficulty walking.

Do you know why it is hard for you to fall asleep? Do you drink caffeine or take other medication that makes it hard to sleep? Do you have a dark room with white noise in the background? Is your room cool? Do you stop electronics an hour before sleep? Do you stop eating several hours before going to bed? Have you tried melatonin before bed? Warm milk? Mediation or soft music?

Have you ever tried gabapentin or Lyrica?

I was also taking Mirtazapine for a few months last year, it was a real nightmare for me, right from the start I couldn’t sleep and it was reputed to be helpful for sleeping problems, if I did nod off for a bit I would have extreme nightmares. The other problems I had were arm and leg cramps and my digestion was messed up with stomach pain, the only benefit was my appetite improved, I couldn’t get anywhere with the doctor to help me so after a few months I weaned myself off the medication, it was the best thing I did, all the side effects went away after a while, perhaps some people do well with this drug but I was one of them.

@exeter, you're right. Mirtazapine is not a sleeping tablet but it can make you feel sleepy. This can be helpful if you have depression and difficulties getting to sleep.

Colleen:

I have had insomnia since about 1973 but I am not depressed at all. I have taken about 6 different sleeping pills but have been on Temazepam the longest. Lorazepam, Dalmane (strong), Elavil (strong), Trazadone, etc.

The Temazepam works ok for me so I didn't want to add a second medication and take TWO every night. If I get four good hours of sleep I can manage ok. And I do that with the one pill.

I've got the pills here and might give it a try and see what happens. I take just the sleeping pill and blood pressure medication - nothing else - and am pretty healthy.

Thanks.

Mirtazapine is the only medication that has finally allowed me to get sleep. Tried many different things and am happy that I’m off benzos. My doctors are fine with being on it indefinitely. I’m on 7.5 mg for over two years. I do feel groggy most of morning but it’s worth it to me. I’m actually going to see if I can reduce the dosage when I meet with my sleep Dr later this month
