Has anyone had a tendon transplant?
I can’t bend my right elbow or lift anything with my right arm. I’ve had no injury, it just gradually got worse. I have no pain. My doctors at Massachusetts General want to do a tendon transplant, moving a muscle from my back to my bicep. Has anyone had this surgery? What can I expect? How about recovery? I am 76 years old. Thanks for any information.

jkx (@jkx) Have your doctors said what their reasoning is for the muscle and tendon transplant? The bicep splits into two muscles with two different tendon attachments into the shoulder- are both of them bad? I have a dropped bicep muscle in each shoulder due to ruptures (yes, fluoroquinolone damage decades ago), but still have one well functioning bicep muscle in each.
Did they tell you what caused the weakness? and what the transplant entails and your recovery? How many of these surgeries have they done, and what was the outcome? (those are just questions for your doctors to tell you).
Thanks for your response. I have had multiple MRI, EMGs, physical therapy and IVIG treatments, all with no improvement. I had a group consultation with both a neurosurgeon and an orthopedic surgeon. My bicep is not functioning at all. I can’t bend my elbow without help from my other arm. It’s more of a neurological problem than an injury to my bicep. I have been going to a neurologist for years and no one knows the cause. It has gradually gotten worse over the last ten years. They explained that it is a major surgery with a long recovery with PT. They both have done this type of surgery many times and feel the results will be good. Both doctors are Board certified in their fields. I do have confidence in them but am a bit worried about the long recovery time. I hope I explained my situation a little better.
