Has anyone had a rems bone scan or tbs bone scan?
I have poor dexa bone scan results, but have heard that rems scans and tbs (trabecular) bone scores can give you a better overall bone health picture. But both, especially rems are pretty new and I wonder if anyone has been able to have one and if their insurance accepts?

I’ve had dexa and rems. I go to Osteo strong and take no osteoporosis drugs. After going to osteostrong for 7-8 months I had a dexa scan. Numbers were great. Then had a Rems. Numbers not so good. I don’t know what to believe and I don’t think I trust any of these tests.. good luck to you!
I just had my first REMs scan and the analyst said one can’t compare the DEXA to REMs as the DEXA only measures density and not bone quality. If you are on Alendronate or other bisphosphonate your bone may appear thicker on a DEXA but your quality is poor and will measure differently on a REMs which takes into account bone quality not just density. One poster on this site needed surgery and her surgeon told her that her bone was as brittle as chalk, as she was on Alendronate and thought she was making her bones stronger. That’s why the REMs is so helpful. My scans were very similar with the recent REMs showing slight improvement from my last DEXA from 2024.

2 ReactionsI have gone to the same Dexa facility for 2 years...and they also have never heard of TBS (software add on to Dexa) let alone REMS. My opinion is that since there seems to be so many moving parts to osteoporosis with different meds, supplements, exercise (osteostrong, etc.), PT, blood tests or not, bone marker tests or not why would we not get every test possible to get a good read on not only our bone density but quality? I know my opinion is not medical; only as a patient but it is extremely hard to understand why we don't get all the information. I shouldn't have to use Dr. Google, unfortunately that's where most of my information comes from. Doctors don't share what they know (or don't know). I understand hard to do in a 10 minute appointment and they have protocols for treatment to follow; they did go to school for a real long time. Haven't heard of an osteoporosis specialist yet but maybe in the future?

2 Reactions@jasperina I was extremely disappointed with my TBS score as well. Only osteopenia, but my bone quality is so bad no amount of exercise or dietary changes of even HRT is going to fix it. I'm going to choose an anabolic and hope and pray I can at least get into the "partially degraded " range.

3 ReactionsHonestly, I think a lot of the things we hear about how ‘lifting heavy’ and ‘ protein’ will cause you to gain bone back significantly is wishful thinking. Yes, it does help, but I believe that after a certain age you cannot make up that much lost ground with purely natural means. At least it wasn’t so for me. I gave it a GOOD try. I am glad to have the option of the anabolic and I feel optimistic. Best of luck to you on your journey.
