Has anyone found a treatment that helps with peripheral neuropathy?

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, Jul 1 10:27am

I suspect that everyone on this forum has been searching for a medication that helps their neuropathy and even though you no that all the internet claims are false we continue to waste hundreds of pounds. Desperation is a powerful force. Has any one been fortunate enough to find a genuine treatment. I just can’t believe that there are so many awful people who prey on our vulnerability and knowingly orchestrate such elaborate scams.

Well I found that an implanted spinal cord stimulator helps me. It’s made by NevroHFX, paid for by Medicare & they can give you a free trial to see if it helps you. Also twice a week I do alpha lipoic acid injections subq into buttocks instead of ALA pills which have absorption problems. That keeps symptoms to a low roar; never eliminates. I am able to sleep and walk. At 84 years old I feel lucky. ALA is something I stumbled on. It’s an injectable med (1cc) I have wife give me. I get a 30ml vial from Empower pharmacy along with needles, 3cc syringes, sharps container & alcohol wipes. Very reasonable out of pocket cost. They were able to get a Dr on their staff to prescribe the medication for me. Most Drs. Have no idea about ALA injections although there is an NIH study that talks about injections. I learned about this from a vitamin store in Sarasota, Fl and then figured out how to eliminate the middle man. You also would need a transfer spike that goes into the vial to allow drawing up into a syringe. There are a couple on Amazon you can buy. Any pharmacist should be able to help you with questions, but best source is Empower which I think has home office in Houston

neuropathy is a symptom and there are 80 kinds of it, so I'm told. I use Voltaren from Amazon that gets me back to sleep in a few minutes. In case your pain is due to arthritis, I use Frankincense and Myrrh also from Amazon that works fast. but my best pain reliever is the recliner! It's a mystery.

Voltaren is great stuff, it really helps when my osteoarthritis is really bad. That, and my recliner and head phones so I can listen to music to help drown out the pain. The only thing that has helped in the past with the pain in my feet from the neuropathy has been pure peppermint extract spray. It feels very cooling on the soles of my feet, and helps with the pain and burning, though only for a short time. After the first application, it doesn't work as well or as long.

My neuropathy has improved dramatically with Magnetic Magic PEMF. I use the device every day for 10 weeks now. It's my main treatment. I also have a shockwave machine l use once a week l got from Amazon and a red light l use 2x a week. The red light l bought from a chiropractor, it's called LZR ultrabright. These are the 3 main treatments at the neuropathy treatment center close to my house. I purchased my own equipments rather than keep paying for office visits. My neuropathy is from over exercising. Chief symptoms were altered blood flow and circulation on my feet, burning, tingling, bruising feeling, cold, and discoloration only on the skin to the bottom of my feet with no swelling. No diabetes, blood tests were all normal. Since l started PEMF, each week l can tolerate being on my feet longer than the week before. I'm almost at 11 weeks and haven't plateau yet. My discoloration has improved, the burning and tingling decreased a lot.

Hi, @mrmacabre ~
Voltaren never helped me but you are right on target with the peppermint extract spray. Yes, it is temporary and needs to be reapplied, but it sure beats screaming into one's pillow with pain. I used it for a couple of years before my EMG diagnosis and still keep it on hand for times when I've found I'm late in taking my Rx pain medications. It helps some until the good stuff kicks in.
You're the first one that I have encountered on Connect that corroborates the peppermint spray treatment!

How about we find out who the scammers are and then we introduce them to a broken jaw.

My TENS machine works very well for my lower back pain but does nothing for my neuropathy. It actually made my neuropathy worse the last time I used it.

Suz, I have similar experience--lower back pain and mostly due to muscle wasting caused by my "disease" which brought on neuropathy. At Physical Therapy they put the TENS machine on me and I noticed change. I no longer go to PT and am trying to strengthen my glutes and hips because that should help get rid of some of the back pain. Are you taking any medication for your back pain? I have to be careful with that too. Even a Salonpas patch caused my heart to race so I do not use that. My PN is mostly numbing and tingling but no pain; however, if you know anything on back pain, I would appreciate your input.

Did you know that taking meds to treat gastric problems interferes with the production of of stomach acid , which aids the absorption etc of certain nutrients and helps with breakdown of others. Magnesium kis one of the things affected. Low magnesium is associated with neuropathy. Since I discovered this I take 420 mgs magnesium every day plus 1/2 or more of Tart Cherry juice twice a day. In 5 to 7 days my neuropathy has gone. I have Parkinson’s also and to get relief from this was wonderful

when you say your Neuropathy was "gone", was it pain, or the tingling, numbness? Thanks

@ arcuri24 I have been on low dose naltrexone (3mg) for 10 years. It does wonders for not only my back and neck pain but the pain associated with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia. I’ve only tried going off it twice and each time my pain returned. The only time I need to take Aleve is when back pain flares due to tweaking it. I have spondilolitheses which slips occasionally. That’s when I pull out the TENS.

Not saying I never have any pain, but that the LDN keeps me from having to take something else most of the time.

Thanks for sharing. It seems there are many options for treating back pain. I am not sure what is best for me. I do have an appointment for acupuncture in two weeks. I am using ice and heat and trying to stay off Advil or Tylenol. I think I might have to stop using free weights for awhile also. Perhaps the exercise bands would be better at this time. While many exercise folk recommend using free weights, some say it can compress joints and lead to pain. All said, it sounds like you have managed your pain successfully!

Have you been diagnosed with the cause as this would affect treatment type ?
