Has anyone experienced sensitive teeth while taking Hydroxyurea ?
Diagnosed with ET with Jax2, 500mg of Hydroxyurea 5 days a week since March of 2025. I am experiencing pain & sensitivity in my teeth. Has anyone dealt with this? Thanks!

On 1000 mg of HU a day for more than a year, I have not experienced this.
But we are all different! Hope others will chime in with helpful suggestions.

1 ReactionYes. I have bleeding gums which I get periodically treatment for. But now teeth occasionally have pain. Usually in one or two. The bleeding gums is partly related to dry mouth, I think. I also have dry eyes and dryness in other mucous membranes. I think it is related to ET not treatment because I had these symptoms before I started treatment.

3 ReactionsOn 500mg Hydroxyurea a day for 8 months. I experienced pain in my teeth initially for a few days but it went away. I sometimes have a problem with mouth sores but found a predental rinse that helps.

3 ReactionsI was diagnosed with PV in Dec 2025 and have been on HU since late December. I noticed the same thing, even before I was diagnosed. My teeth seem sensitive and sometimes blood with brushing/flossing. I have flossed for years and never had any gum issues after I started flossing. So I think it might be the PV itself. Not sure. Have doc appt tomorrow and plan to ask about this.

3 ReactionsHello I'm in the UK, I'm currently on one 1000mg per day of Hydrea and have been on this medication since around 2019. I don't have any issues with my teeth. I have started having issues with hair loss and brittle nails.
I'm male and 70 years old though.

2 ReactionsYes!!! When they switched me to seven days a week I couldn’t tolerate it. I had such tooth sensitivity and nerve pain. Not hot or cold sensitivity just random tooth pain that comes and goes. I switched back to five days and have phlebotomies more often instead of increasing meds. I have PV diagnosed three years ago.

1 Reaction@sylann725 Correction to my previous post, I use a pre-brush dental rinse that helps the mouth sores.
@eloise999 thank you for replying!!
