Has anyone damaged their teeth during a seizure?

Posted by tonyde @tonyde, Mar 14 3:09pm

I recently broke off a section my one of my molars and have no memory of it happening. My dentist told I need crowns for that tooth and the one next to it caused by grinding.

Has anyone experienced breaking a tooth during a seizure or experienced other tooth damage?

@ginnjuice - when you say you still feel like you are missing something, will you share more about that? What types of signs, symptoms or other occurrences are you noticing?

I'm 41. I've only had 2 seizures where I lost consciousness, the rest of them are focal. Do brain cells grow back? My last one was recent and the first day at a new job I feel a little slow

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @joeyjensen1959. Sorry to hear you fell and chipped your front teeth.

Wondering what your diagnosis is, joeyjensen1959? Did you get your teeth repaired? If so, what kind of reparation was done?

My fiance had his first ever grand mal seizure in 4/17. It happened at 4am while he was in the bathroom getting for work. He fell and hit his head, nose and mouth on our bathroom table (wood) he convulsed pretty long and violently. His nose was pretty banged up and bruised and he broke about 6-7 top teeth. He had a retainer and his retainer was hanging from his mouth with his teeth. He had to have 8 extractions. Supposedly if you break or lose teeth during medical injury, it can be billed and covered by medical due to it being from a seizure that’s what we are trying currently because dental work for denture or implants is quoted at 8k for everything. He is currently on Keppra

My empathy for your fiance. I hope he recovers well. I visit another support group and participants complain while sharing experiences. This is what I like about our Mayo group; simply experiences and questions seeking help...and others willing to give it. So, when I see people complain, they should read about what your fiance and others have experienced. Not a gran mal, but I personally had a seizure while walking into a vacation cabin (3 steps) after a jog. Worse damage in 25 years. Lip swollen big, severe bruising around nose and eyes, cut face, arms scraped badly, you know the story. Went to a restaurant that evening and even had another person thank me for my service. Damaged so badly, she thought I'd returned from Afghanistan. Note: not complaing. I wish the general public know what we experience. Again, I wish your fiance well.

I've also had my share of broken teeth that needed crowns, and I’m looking forward to finding a better solution soon. Right now, I have two night guards, but they’ve been quite uncomfortable, which makes it hard to use them consistently. I know it’s time to explore alternatives, if any, that might work better for me. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors!
Take care,
Jake
