Has anyone been diagnosed with Meningioma with edema

Posted by as72 @as72, Dec 4 5:21pm

Had MRI two days ago and found 1.8 cm meningioma Met with internist today, said this is what they call a “mass affect” which is causing the brain to shift off center. If it was just a small 1.8 cm they would do a wait and see approach, but due to the swelling they will probably want to do surgery. Scheduled two appointments with neurosurgeons, one next week and week after at Cedar Sinai for two opinions. Still getting headaches. Because there are neurological symptoms my guess is they will want to do surgery. Frightening!

Hi! I had an incidental finding of a 1.7 cm probable meningioma in Sept. I am considered to have no symptoms but I get mild headaches and a mild feeling of being off balance that lasts a couple of seconds. Not sure if it's related. I also have swelling and mass effect. It's left occipital lobe midline involving the sagital sinus but no obstruction. A neurologist advised watching it, and 2 neurosurgeons recommended gamma knife with only one of them saying watch and wait is not unreasonable. A neurosurgeon who only does surgery advised that I am a candidate for surgery but also referred me to one on the surgeons who advised gamma knife. I had a repeat 3 mo. Scan which called it 1.8 cn. but no significant change from the original. I have an appointment in 2 weeks to discuss the results. Not at all sure what I'll do. I am 73 so that factors in for me also. Let's keep in touch!

Hi, good to hear that the headache is gone. Hopefully you won’t have to be on steroids for too long; they can cause some issues. They made me temporarily diabetic. Strangely, I didn’t have any headaches. But the large tumor size and the edema and swelling were making me slowly go insane. My symptoms were similar to stroke or dementia. I’m lucky I didn’t have a stroke. Emergency craniotomy surgery was done a few days after the tumor was discovered. That was 10 months ago. Went home using a walker two weeks after surgery after a long period of physical and occupational therapy. I was walking unaided and biking two weeks after getting home. I had follow-up radiation treatment in the summer. For me the treatments were easy with just some minor hair loss at the temple. It’s starting to grow back 3 months after finishing treatment. I’m doing fine now, no after effects except the incision is a bit irritated. This may be lifelong as I have some surgical scars from more than 40 years ago that still get irritated. Plus I get to look forward to periodic MRI’s for the rest of my life. Huzzah! Since everyone’s case is different, I can’t predict what the neurosurgeon will recommend. Sorry for the long post. Good luck with the appointment.

Thank you for responding. How large was your tumor and how was it found? I didn’t know they do radiation after surgery, thought it was gamma knife, cyber or crainiology? Hope the irritation subsides soon. I’ve been hearing once you get a meningioma they do routine MRI’s.

We have almost identical symptoms and size. Mine is 1.8 cm. I too, get mild headaches, and occasional brief off balance. Must be related. I see first neurosurgeon Wednesday. Not sure if I have a choice and if I do not sure what I want to do. I’m 72 yo and my son is getting married 9 months from now. Would love to keep in touch!

Congratulations on your son's wedding! That's wonderful. I have a married daughter and grandson and a son not yet married.
Funny thing about the tumor, if I hadn't been in a car accident I would not even know about it.
Our situations have many similarities. I'm glad to share my journey!

Looking forward to having grandchildren. Hope my health holds up to get to know them. My youngest (34) is living his best life traveling the world.
Slipping on my hardwood floor was a blessing in disguise.
Four weeks yesterday, still have a some bruising on my cheek.
Glad to know why I get morning headaches, occasional dizziness, and didn’t feel like myself.

Hello,
I became unable to get out of a chair. My partner called an ambulance and I was taken to a small local hospital where I had a CT scan. The scan revealed a large frontal lobe mass. I was taken to a larger hospital where an MRI determine the mass to be probable meningioma measuring 6.3 cm. After the surgery pathology determined the tumor to be WHO grade 2 meningioma. Grade 2 meningiomas have a greater chance of returning, so radiation treatment after surgery is often recommended to kill whatever may remain after resection. Usually the radiation is intensity modulated X-rays given in fractional doses over several weeks. Sometimes proton therapy is used which can have lesser side effects. I had 30 treatments over a 6 week period. Gamma knife is very concentrated and precise and often used to destroy smaller tumors or tumors that can’t be surgically removed. Yes, routine MRIs become the new normal😖

@as72 Yes! I will. My next visit is 12/18. I'll let you know how it goes.
I had had a concussion so I'm being told my symptoms could be related to that still. So I'm not sure.
I'm retired (Nurse) since 2022 and split my time between Manhattan and the Hudson Valley - an hour North. I'm glad to have easy access to experts.

Thank you for the prayers. Turns out they never scheduled the appointment for me tomorrow. Getting me in next Wednesday. Such a frightening diagnosis. After all I’ve read, once I meet the neurosurgeon and get their input, I think I’d like to do the watch and wait or the cyber knife. Not sure I’ve read, it’s only a matter of time before it grows and I will be 75 by then. I’m healthy now, but who ever knows, that could change on a dime. The steroids really helped after 5 days.

@randallshields56 I admire your courage, Randy! And your willingness to reach out to help others at the same time you are dealing with your own struggles. I'm taking it one day at a time and I believe the correct course will become apparent. I hope so. Sending hugs and best wishes your way.
