Has any long hauler been diagnosed with thinning optic nerve/glaucoma?

Posted by ronag @ronag, May 3, 2023

I had covid in April 2022. Many symptoms have lingered since then, most notably post exertional malaise, shortness of breath, coughing, GI problems, autoimmune disease, and brain fog. I was at the ophthalmologist last week and while my eye pressure was normal, the doctor noticed a thinning of the optic nerve. He doesn't think it's related to long covid but I'm wondering if this is just another problem caused by this plague. Apparently a thinning optic nerve is a manifestation of glaucoma. Has anyone else been told their optic nerve is thinning?

I know one other person who got the same info from their doctor as you, so you’re not alone! Prior to getting COVID, I had 20/20 vision and now - 13 months later with Long COVID - I need to wear glasses with a slight correction or I’ll get a headache or migraine (depending on what I’m doing without them on) and have trouble with balance/spatial awareness. My eyes get really dry too. Ophthalmologist said I had normal eyesight for someone my age (41) and didn’t note damage. I can see fine without them too, BUT it gives me those symptoms, so I need to wear them. Artificial tears help a bit, and it doesn’t seem to be getting worse, so it’s probably due to the central sensitization underlying the Long COVID.

I'm going for further testing this week. Would you know what her final diagnosis was and what treatment she's receiving?

No, I don’t - sorry. All I know is that she had Long COVID and had an optic nerve problem in her eye that a doctor was able to test and identify. Good luck!

I’d also recommend looking in to Central Sensitization Syndrome as that is what causes my eye problems.
