Hand/arm numbness during sleep

Posted by jhamil01 @jhamil01, Aug 12, 2023

Distinct from numbness and tingling when awake, I have been experiencing my upper limbs falling asleep which frequently awakens me during sleep.

Yes. This happens to me almost every night. My hands feel like pons and needles. Wakes me up and then I have to shake and massage them to get the feeling back. At first I thought I was sleeping on the them in a position that was blocking the blood flow but now it think it's one of the LC or dysautonomia symptoms.

Do you have any other health conditions? I have Type I diabetes, so thought my tingling and numbness was diabetic neuropathy, but my neurologist says it’s not. So….I’m at a loss.

Omg…this really has me stumped. My neurologist was emphatic that I did not have neuropathy and I sort of doubted him….I didn’t think my blood sugar levels had been that high….so….idk. I can only hope those symptoms subside. I know my diet and exercise is optimal. All I keep getting are reports they are doing more research on LC. Hope it helps.

My neighbor has LC lung impairment. She has severe lung impairment now. She’s had hers over a year.

I wonder what will happen.

Have you had your thyroid checked recently? Low thyroid can cause fatigue and numbness and tingling in your hands. I had those symptoms and thought I had carpel tunnel in both hands, but blood tests showed I had low thyroid. A few weeks after starting thyroid supplements, those symptoms went away.

Thank you for your description of success with thyroid supplements. My thyroid just tested low for the first time ever. My Endocrinologist ordered a retest in two weeks to confirm. If still low I’ll begin medication. Hope this helps with my fatigue (Post-Exertional Malaise).

I had radiation near my thyroid 12 years ago so I'm on low dose of Synthroid. It does have side effects. Do you think Covid caused your low thyroid? I have Long Covid going into my third year so I have chronic fatigue. I hope the medication works for you.

Thank you for your question: might LC have caused my (tentative) hypothyroidism?

I just searched on the term “thyroid” in our LC support group comments. Some people suspect their hypothyroidism was caused by Covid. However, they report other co-occurring symptoms that might indicate another disease was the cause. Typical of LC issues: complicated!

Yes, everything is complicated with Covid. Since getting Covid I have so many symptoms It's unreal. Now I have high cortisol and I'm being tested for Cushing disease. I am so burnt out on doctors and tests, I think I am getting PTSD!!!

I know u posted this long ago..so just in case you’re still searching for answers then this is my take .. but if you’ve found out what it is then don’t bother reading!
I just saw your post now …and sounds like it could be potentially what I have, which is HNPP. Get it checked out, worth researching into a little then ask your doctor if you can get tested for it (or a referral to a specialist who can) HNPP stands for hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies. I get woken up in the middle of the night from time to time. Pins n needles, numbness in limbs, sometimes so bad I can’t stand until about 5 minutes of stamping my foot to get the sensation back in my leg (calf n foot). Sometimes I have it weekly then, at the moment, nothing for over 6 months. My cousin has it and we suspect an auntie (ie: it’s genetic.. plus most general doctors would not have a clue about this. 50% chance of passing this on to your children.).

Neuropathy means damage to the nerves that supply the electrical impulses to the muscles as well as the nerves that detect sensation. Liability to pressure palsies means that when pressure is put on a nerve, it stops working for a period. Very variable condition. I’ve been great and no symptoms recently and I’m 47 female. My 32 year old cousin male, has it. It affects people who are missing one of the two copies of the PMP22 gene. Check it out if u have not yet found n answer.
