Groundglass opacities within the lungs what does it mean?

Posted by sabrina95123 @sabrina95123, Jun 1, 2023

I recently had an annual CT Scan done. We were just checking to see if 3 black spots were still on my lower left lung or had they grown. The CT Scan came back with several abnormality's. Such as Ground glass opacities within the lungs probably on the basis of motion and
examination acquired in expiration. I have had this awful cough since Nov 2022. I have checked my CT Scans from previous years. Ground glass opacities was never mentioned.

@sabrina95123 I had ground glass opacities last year. It turned out that the medicine I was taking, methotrexate was causing damage to my lungs.
Once I stopped it my lungs cleared quickly.

I hope you feel better soon!

I have ground glass nodules (I believe they are the same as opacities) discovered on a CT as I have emphysema. As a former smoker and discussion with my pulmonologist I had a robotic bronchoscopy done in March. All biopsies were negative for cancer. They will continue to be monitored.

I have it also in both lungs. I understand it's typical for long COVID sufferers.

It is also typical of COP. Cryogenic Organized Pneumonia .

I just found out that one of my ground glass nodules needs a biopsy. Most likely robotic. What was your experience from this procedure?

I had the CT Scan 2 weeks ago and the Dr. who viewed the CT Scan said that I must have been moving around a lot. I didn't move at all. I have asked for a second opinion. I have been coughing non stop since Nov of 22. I have an appt to have a Pulmonary function test done. I hope to find out soon after if I need to worry.

Good that you are getting the second opinion.
I have been followed for 3 years, last time 9/22, and it has been stable. This one last week was an angiogram for a heart work up. The previous ones were done without contrast- even though contrast was ordered. The imaging center decided it did not need contrast. It’s a shortage of contrast.
I think that’s why they may not have been so accurate.

I had three nodules to biopsy and some surrounding lymph nodes so I was under for about 3 hours. My pulmonologist was very open with me and options discussed. The care that I received from the medical staff was wonderful.
It was a same day procedure so after a few hours in recovery I was allowed to go home. Other than being a bit groggy I felt fine.
I did have some post procedure issues and was given antibiotics. I developed pneumonia a few weeks after but with additional antibiotics and taking it easy for a few days I was fine. That can all be somewhat common after this procedure. Everyone is different though!
It was all worth it to know everything was benign. I have a followup CT and PFT in a few weeks and that will be my baseline moving forward for my doctor.
I am totally comfortable with my pulmonologist and like that he listens and engages in conversation to answer my questions. For this alone I am grateful.
Sorry for the long winded answer but hope it helped.

I had groundglass and inflammation in my lungs and was diagnosed with ILD in 2020. I feel great today but am still on Cellcept.
