Great improvement in spine with Tymlos

Posted by kplex @kplex, Jan 27 9:19am

After 1 year on Tymlos, taking full dose every day, my L1-4 improved from -3.5 to -1.9!! I am thrilled. My hip areas either held steady (left hip) or improved very slightly (-2.5 to -2.4). I am continuing Tymlos for another 3-4 months to get closer to the 18-month optimum improvement in spine that is typical with Tymlos…hoping for more gains! Then will take Reclast infusion to keep gains and hopefully improve hip. My TBS (quality of bone) showed degradation, as expected, but my Dr said Reclast should help that. BTW, I have been doing light upper body weight lifting (5-8-10 pounds), 6 exercises, at least twice a week for one year. I also walk 30-45 minutes at least 5 days a week. I’m obviously a bit giddy I have improved my BMD in spine so much! This all seems outside our control and all we can do is use the tools we have available.

hey, kplex, excellently good news, this morning.
Have you drawn bone marker? You might want to sometime before starting Reclast, and then at the end of the first year of Reclast to determine if you need a second year injection.
You have four months to determine how to avoid the possible hazards of Reclast.
But for now, Cheers!

@gently yes, my Dr has been doing those tests and other blood work every 3 months and they will be done again before I have a Reclast infusion. My doctor practices at a specialized Bone and Mineral Metabolism Clinic at a university. Based on reading posts here and elsewhere, it appears we are covering all the bases. Hoping I manage ok with Reclast. My Dr told me before I even brought it up that she prescribes fluids with the infusion.

@kplex Great results! Just be warned that the Tymlos gains after a year are typically much lower. I gained 15% the first year, 5% the second. I'm still happy about a total of 20%, of course. Try not to start thinking that you'll get down to -1.3 or something in another year. You'll gain something, and then you can move on to the next phase.

You've made great progress!

@njx58 yes, I hope for a bit more in gains… not expecting much, but anything at all will be great.

@kplex You're doing great! Isn't it nice to see a number that is -1.something instead of -3.something?

@kplex Congratulations!! Yes, must have been thrilling to see the results -- -1.9 is near perfect!! It took me two years to get to -1.8 (from -3.7), and you did it in one year! By the way: I see someone commented that in the second year on Tymlos, the gains are not so great. That's what the company says, and what my docs cautioned, but in fact it turned out my gains were just as great the second year, even slightly more. It was a big surprise. So you'll have to see.

@sebutler I won’t be having anotherDXA—insurance won’t cover—until after a year of Reclast, so I won’t really know, but that is ok with me.

@kplex Congratulations! That’s really fantastic!

Can you share how you managed side effects? Do you have any tips for those of us who are afraid to start?

I did my injection at night just before I went to bed…I was careful to make sure that the bevel of the needle was straight. My side effects ranged from a tightening feeling around my head to a racing heart/palpitations, to occasional nausea. After the injection I went directly to bed and calmly breathed, and after about 20 minutes those side effects—-and not always the same ones, never all 3 together—went away and I drifted off to sleep, I did not have dizziness, which my Dr warned me about, and her reason for injecting just prior to bedtime. I occasionally had a red area around injection site, which went away in a day. I always tried to use a sterile cotton pad to apply slight pressure immediately after injection. I think I was fortunate to only have these relatively mild side effects. Good luck!
