Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra, Volunteer Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)
  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful
  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle’s full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven’t yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

@gingerw

Today I am grateful (once again!) for our group of Gratitude connectors! You all give each day a silver lining. @debbraw, it was great to hear the success of your dinner gathering. Precious memories for sure.
We have finished my little sitting area outside, just the basics. Husband will build in a rain gutter, we'll be putting in more pea gravel, and I will move some of my plants there.

I had a very busy, but good day today. I baked banana bread, made some crock pot candy, and wrapped gifts. I am thankful to have all those chores done. I was also able to get in a long walk in our beautiful weather.

@karen00 How funny that you mention warrior. I recently got a new car and I have named her DK which stands for Da Koa for "the warrior" in Hawaiian. Yes I am a warrior!

@karen00 I am thrilled about the new car and you are a warrior. God bless you!

@gingerw Hi Ginger, your sitting area sounds great! Kudos to you and your husband. I’m up again-can’t sleep. I have my appointment with my new psychiatrist today and my anxiety is through the roof. I loved my previous one-saw him for about 15 years.
Will you get some new plants for your area? What do you like? You can sit and read Connect posts. This can be your “Connecter” area.

@rosegold Hi Rosegold, thanks so much for writing! I had a good day today. I have moved back to my hometown which was a bittersweet move. I love it here, but I left behind some wonderful friends. 2 of my best friends visited me today. I cried practically the whole time! I have missed them so much. It was a wonderful day!

Dang! I have been so busy today I have not had time to be grateful – nor to read one post! I'm just checking in to say I have completed my New England Seafood Casserole, wild rice with mushrooms, asparagus, and for dessert, bourbon cake. Ya'll wish me luck! My little dinner party is starting in one hour.

I am grateful for the vision of your dinner! I made scones before church yesterday – a fun bag of mixed cherries, cranberries and golden raisins from Walmart got me inspired. Should have saved some home for myself – they were tasty – but grateful for the church family I have to share them with. My mother's brain bleed post stroke is gone completely, and dad and sibs are still all communicating fairly calmly about next steps. Yeah! Saw a wonderful Christmas program yesterday, and grateful for a job to go back to on Monday morning.

@karen00 I did not inherit my mother's green thumb. But cacti, succulents, and roses do okay with me. I have some potted cacti that moved with me, and will place a few there. Might try to place a hanging planter there, also. Even our kitty was interested in the space, and she is strictly indoor. If I can make it screened in, she can go out there.

Today I am grateful the peppermint bark turned out great. I'm not a fancy cook. And I'm grateful the family disfunction that has persisted with my siblings, is alive and well. That sounds strange, doesn't it? But it helps me realize how far I have come in my healing, to see it from far off and steer clear of it, not engage, and let it roll off my back.

Wow. There were so many happy posts last night and today that it just made me smile. I love the description of the sitting area that @gingerw and husband built. That sounds so relaxing! And the visit with old friends that brought @karen00 happy tears – it touched my heart! And the happy news from @elizabethzimmermann about your mom's brain bleed being totally gone. That is wonderful! That's not all – the scones and peppermint bark cheered me up too! Love all you Gratitude Connectors!

Today I was really feeling overwhelmed with gifts to wrap, packages to mail, cards to address, etc. So I sat down and made a list. Once I had it in front of me on paper, it didn't look so overwhelming. It actually felt do-able! So I'm grateful for being able to change my attitude and get to a more positive place.

Now I'm going to start tackling that list I made. Good night all!

Feeling rather overwhelmed myself. Thank you @debbraw for a brief update.
Missing y’all!!
Thankful for the sunshine and warmer temps. Today’s view from my bedroom window.

Hello @jodeej

You have intrigued me with "crock pot candy." Tell me more about that. Anything that can be done in a crock pot seems so much easier than anything that can be done on a stove or an oven.

Today, I'm grateful for a great new recipe (and its gluten free) for a carrot cake that can be also used for muffins. It turns out so moist, light and flavorful.
