Got drunk while on antidepressants (Lexapro): what now?

Super worried because I was not aware of not being able to not intake any alcohol. Will I be okay?

Maybe you should call a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist there. Try a 24-hour branch of the drug store that filled your prescription.

I'm an old lady so I feel like I can say that it was a pretty stupid thing to do-- sorry to be so frank. Please pretend I'm your grandmom or somebody who loves you a lot and is saying that.
Whenever you get a prescription filled, you should read ALL of the information that they stick in the bag.

I hope your anxiety is getting better at this point. Antidepressants do not work for us when we are taking in alcohol. Speak with the pharmacist as the other member mentioned, but please know that ongoing consumption of alcohol does not help with depression and anxiety. I speak from experience. I am free from it now grateful to my therapist, doctors and family.
Big virtual hug and happy holidays to you.

They don’t mix not worth the risk

Believe anything associated with Anti-depressants, including the bottle it comes in warns against drinking alcohol and taking the anti-depressant. Will you be okay? That is totally up to you. If it was not a bad experience, you may decide that it was not a bad thing to do and will repeat what was a decision that was done on purpose. If not, you will decide that alcohol and anti-depressants taken together are similar to playing Russian roulette and the two should not be mixed, ever. Good luck.

@alicorn2237 I’m not going to engage in judgment on your question. You would not have come to the Mayo Clinic Connect forum had you not realized you made a mistake.

Are you prescribed anti-depressants because you were diagnosed with depression? If yes, then using alcohol will only result in more depression and make your mood feel worse. Alcohol is a depressant on the central nervous system. So while you might feel good and your mood is lifted up while you are using alcohol once you come down from the high your mood is likely to plummet. I’m talking from experience and from the experiences of people I know. Also, people I know who use alcohol often do not tend to take their antidepressants as prescribed.

Whether or not you will be “okay” is a good question to ask the doctor who prescribed the antidepressant medication. The path to feeling better is to take your antidepressant medication as prescribed, and see a mental health therapist.

Are you currently seeing a therapist? If yes, then you can ask your therapist your question too.

Thank you so much. Yes, it was definitely a mistake that I do not wish to make again. I take them for anxiety, and yes afterwards I felt the symptoms of that back but nothing more. I was making sure I was okay in the physical sense. Thank you again!

@alicorn2237 You are very welcome. I hope you continue to feel better. Do you see a mental health therapist? Seeing a therapist who practices acceptance and nonjudgment can be so helpful for anxiety.

Hi Friend,
I'm not going to judge you. I've done unwise things too. I hear you. Please forgive yourself, and do your best not to drink alcohol.
