Gluteus Maximus Transfer Surgery - need surgeon recommendation please
does anyone know of a surgeon capable of doing this surgery IN a hospital? I was in a serious accident 8 yrs ago & had surgeries to fix other things but never a solution for hip. I've seen 10 surgeons in 2 states with 5 hospitals & clinics. I finally got a proper diagnosis and was scheduled for surgery BUT IT GOT CANCELLED & the surgeon is not doing it. HE Quit the cleveland clinic as Dir. of Hip Preservation and now is only doing out patient surgery at a boutique clinic. His outpatient surgery center will not take me - they said I must be an INPATIENT at a hospital. There is no surgeon I know of qualified to do this surgery and as an IN PATIENT at a hosptial in Cleveland area. I NEED A GLUTE MAX TRANSFER. MY GLUTEUS MEDIUS MUSCLE & TENDON ARE TORN OFF THE BONE AND COMPLETELY ATROPHIED FROM INJURY 2017. I HAVE SIGNIFICANT EDEMA AND FLUID IN GREAT TROCANTER BURSA.
I also have a labral tear but that is a separate surgery and not urgent at the moment. I am unable except with walk cuff crutches- and then only very short disatnces and in horrible pain 24/7. I was extremely active prior to injuries. Any surgeon recommendations? Please do not tell me to go back to this other surgeon. He said NO & is done.

Curious to know if you did the surgery and what doctor did you choose. Thanks
HI @jazzy44... Are you looking for a doctor? I found one... starting from scratch... see below... After months of deep researching and weeks of calls, I have an appointment on June 11, 2026, with HSS—the Hospital for Special Surgery—in New York City. They are exclusively an all-orthopedic hospital system across New York City areas and the oldest and #1 orthopedic specialty hospital in the USA. I have Medicare & discovered that many Drs. at HSS do NOT take it. IMHO this is self-selecting the patient's age by excluding Medicare. My first-choice surgeon did not take Medicare—Dr. Benedict Nwachukwu. His office refered me to Dr. Anil S. Ranawat who DOES take medicare. Dr. Ranawat's office said I need all new images within their system and a DX referral back to him because my images are 2 yrs old or older. That makes sense to me. He referred me to Dr. Ryan Lingor for that, but Lingor doesn't take Medicare. Lingor referred me to Dr. Mckenzie Campbell-Potter, who is a primary care sports medicine specialist who DOES TAKE MEDICARE. My first appt is June 11. She will automatically do X-rays before seeing me, BUT I really need an MRI and maybe a CT scan or nerve tests before seeing the surgeon. I live in Akron, OH, near Cleveland, and I'm driving to NJ. I'll take a train from the Summit train station near Berkeley Heights to Penn Station NYC & then a taxi to E. 71st St. Manhattan. I cannot walk without a walker—I use a European-style Nitro Sprint walker & a folding cane. My only family is in NH & London, and neither is able to assist. Whenever I do schedule surgery, I will be looking for SNF for post-op. Non-weight-bearing for 6-8-12 wks immobilized in a brace. You are welcome to contact me any time.
@ennaoj44
Did you have your surgery at Rush in Chicago? How was it? How are you? How has your recovery been?
@hlthcr2000
I'm sorry to be so late responding to this post oh my gosh, how are you feeling?
Where did you have your surgery and who was your surgeon? Can you share that please? Thank you.
So pleased to -maybe- be able to help. I went through the same issues with Medicare at HSS. IBDID HAVE 2 prior surgeries there but couldn’t get any help with the gluteus medius. I found my surgeon through a PT I had previously seen. My surgery was performed by Dr. A.J. Lall. He is outstanding. I have no residual pain or impairment. However I need to warn you the recovery is long!!! Contact info: http://www.LALLorthopedics.com phone 201.733.5255
@hlthcr2000 thank you for this. I am so curious if you are willing to share some more info. I am thrilled you have a full recovery with NO pain. That's my dream.
Dr Lall is impressive!
At HSS did u see either Dr Ratawan or Loyd B Glayle? I'm curious why no one there could help you.
Did Dr Lall do an "open" procedure glute max Trf or "something else?" If so what?
Was surgery In-Patient at a hospital or out-patient at a clinic?
Did u spend any time in hospital and then discharged to a skilled nursing/rehab nursing.
what was the immediate post-op care
Was there a 2 wk follow up or what type follow-up happened?
A Dr in cleveland wanted to out- patient surgery on me for glute max Trf & greater trochanter bursaectomy & maybe labrum repair & send me home the same day- but the surgery center cancelled it the day before. They said it required a hospital OR & recovery. He quit shortly after. Then I discovered that he never got hospital privileges after he left the Clev Clinic.
Did u live in general NYC-NJ area or did you travel a distance to surgery? I'm curious what other people do and how they manage travel & post op care. I live alone & have no "assist" so will need to go to skilled nursing or rehab center. That's why I worry when surgeons push out patient only option for surgery.
Thank you so much.🙏
Did Dr Lall treat you with any stem cell or biologics?
I look forward to learning more about your remarkable journey & positive outcome.
Thank you in advance.
Message -#2. Ops I see Dr Lall has 5 offices in several states. You saw him in Paramus? Did u also have surgery there too?
