I have an endocrinology appointment coming up this Thursday. I have a nephrology appointment coming up in May. I will ask both providers for their input on GLP-1 meds, weight loss and kidney function. Then I’ll be happy to report back what I find out. I’ve been curious about this for some time.

The original research on GLP one was for people who are diabetic. It proved to be an advantage that has been FDA approved.
The manufactured noticed during the study that people who were diabetic and also had CKD showed to CKD improvement.
The requested FDA approval for combination CKD and diabetic patients and this was granted.
A recent study was conducted for CKD patients using GLP one drugs and it was found to be effective.
The approval process is underway however your nephrologist could prescribe it as an off label use for to prove drug for a patient with CKD Only.
You really should look up and read the study or at least the abstract of the study before you speak to your nephrologist.
when presented with an abstract of study and a request to discuss the GLP use for my CKD, my nephrologist went bunkers, accusing me of second-guessing his skills as a physician.
I have an appointment early next week with the Mayo Clinic nephrologist but I’m hoping is less egotistical and more medical so I can get the benefit of form treatment.
Good luck

2 ReactionsI have also red to cautioning that there has been reports of your hair starts falling out. : )
I saw endocrinology yesterday. I asked about GLP-1 meds. The response was that GLP-1 meds were initially developed for treatment of diabetes. They mimic hormones that are produced in your guts. Which explains why they ended up being beneficial weight loss aid medications. Personally speaking I have a history of gastroparesis (a complication of diabetes) and therefore these meds could be harmful rather than helpful to me. We didn’t discuss any effect GLP-1 meds might have on CKD. That will have to wait for my nephrology appointment next month.

2 Reactions@cehunt57 Most of GLP-1 meds are adverstised as a way to control the progress of CKD. However, as in my case, when the kidney functions are below 25, these type of drugs are not recommended, because they tend to lower the kidney functions at the beginning of treatment. A talk with your nephrologist is the first step to evaluate your condition and find out if the benefits associated with GLP-1 in your particular case outweight the risks. Good luck!
