Glp-1 medication after breast cancer

Posted by cancerwifemom @cancerwifemom, Sep 7, 2025

I’m about 4 years post diagnosis, and about 3 years out of chemo. Taking tamoxifen and doing zoladex injections currently. I feel that the medically induced menopause (I’m 44) is keeping me from losing weight despite my healthy lifestyle choices. I’ve been trying for 2 years to lose weight and just can’t. Wondering if anyone has experiences with glp-1 medications after breast cancer? My cancer was very low ER positive and negative PR and HER2. it was basically treated as triple negative but due to the low hormone, I’m doing the full course of tamoxifen and the injections. I’m going to talk to my doctor of course, but looking for personal experiences too. I’ll see my doctor in a couple of weeks in person. I’m not terribly overweight, but definitely not where I want to be or should be.

Thank you for your experiences with weight loss after treatments. I gained 10 pounds after treatments and always believed it had something to do with the treatments. What is worse is that I can’t get it off in all the normal ways. I am 76 and had never had a weight problem of more than 5 lbs +/-.
I am considering the GLP-1 options and am glad to hear it was supported by your oncologist.

I have been on Zepbound for 6 months after going through BC treatment in 2022. I gained weight with Lupron and AI. My oncologist said GLP-1s will become "standard" for women who gain weight after treatment. She enthusiastically supported me and I've lost about 25 pounds so far, with 10 more to go. My PCP, with help from my oncologist, wrote my insurance for a prescription that emphasized my BC and they covered it. It's really helped a lot.

What insurance company do you have? That’s great that it was covered. My PCP told me that I would not qualify for coverage because I don’t have diabetes. (Yet). I am insulin resistant. I have like 65 lbs to lose. It’s makes sense to allow people with a history of BC to able to take it. Excess fat=more estrogen=higher risk of recurrence. Ugh. Thanks for sharing your wonderful news. I’ll bring it up again to my PCP and my oncologist.

I am currently taking it- started about 4 months ago. It has helped lose some weight. I do have to watch what I eat carefully. I am very active. Doing healthy yoga, pranayama and walk- I would call myself a little chubby. ER +. HER - and am on Examestane . I am 62.

My acupuncturist recommended it( she is also an oncologist).
