Gastritis ppis

Posted by daphne52 @daphne52, May 21, 2022

I'm have gastritis and prescribed 40mg pantoprazole for 3 months by gastro doc and now my URO doc started me on Keflex antibiotic for 6 months for chronic utis. Been on both meds for 1 month now, After a month on the pantoprazole I still have the upper stomach pain. I ask the gastro doc if the antibiotic could be keeping the stomach from healing, he said yes. He wants me to now take 40mg pantoprazole Twice a day (80mg). I have osteoporosis and terrified the 80mg will break my bones, also, I read 80mg is way too much. Been miserable too long. Any advice please?

I was on 40mg Pantaprazole 2x a day. I'm now on 40mg 1x a day 30 min. before supper. I have chronic gastritis and doubt it will ever go away. Did you get checked for H Pylori?

I had a test done for CYP2C19 enzyme before taking a cardiac medication. It showed I was an ultra-fast metabolizer. If you're in that category, or the rapid category ,you have an insufficient response to PPI's like Omeprazole. Other medications are effected too.

I'd been taking Omeprazole for gastritis, and GERD for years, and it didn't work. Then I was switched to Pantaprazole, which works a little better. Silly to take medications that are not the correct dosage.

Don’t know . I had a bleeding ulcer and that’s when they found it along with BE. I was on PPI’s and it didn’t go away. I don’t think it will ever go away. I have no symptoms from it. I’m off of pantaprazole and the severe leg cramping is now gone. I was waking up at night in severe pain from it. I get scoped again in October so I’ll find out then if it’s still there.

PPI’s can be problematic to
your digestive tract. I was on them, and after 6 months had an endoscopy and was told to never to take again as my cells were hypertrophic. I had GERD plus SIBO. Doctors need to monitor you while you are on PPI’s.
If you are taking an antibiotic, it is helpful to take a prebiotic and probiotic at the same time. As you probably know, antibiotics kill the bad and good bacteria. Seems counterintuitive to up your dose of the antibiotics. We need the good bacteria. Also PPI’s reduce gastric juices. Again, counterintuitive as our bodies need gastric juices to digest our food.
Every time I went off pharmaceuticals, my symptoms returned. It’s a vicious cycle.
It is also necessary to change or improve your diet. What you eat is critical to improving the lining of the digestive tract. Seek out a good nutritionist if your doctor doesn’t have one.
I suggest an excellent book - Super Gut by Dr. William Davis. I’ve been seeing a functional medicine doctor and what is in this book is very similar to what my doctor has been recommending for me. He also outlines foods you should be eating along with recipes. Functional Medicine can be expensive as most insurance for not cover. Medicare certainly doesn’t. But if you have the drive to follow the plan in Super Gut, it is worth a try to avoid pharmaceuticals.
If you want to seek out a good functional medicine doctor who will thoroughly test and treat without pharmaceuticals, ifm.org lists doctors by city and state. Seek out ones whose specialty is digestive issues.
Best to all! It is a long journey back to health.
