7 months post Gastric Bypass Surgery: Constant bad smell in my nose

Posted by happyhealthy @happyhealthy, Aug 31, 2018

7 months into this surgery. I constantly have the smell of sewage in my nose. Anyone else experience this?

Welcome to Connect, @happyhealthy. Taste and smell changes seem to be a common concern for many patients. I'd like to introduce you to a few members who've discussed this surgery – @aprilarlady @gailb @kduran23 @leona1966 @grandmar @nataliejo @purrplegnome @bergordon @tlopez @tessandra @loli @vikinglaurie @missyb57 @carebear2014 – I'm hoping they will join us and share their insights.

You might be interested in reading this recently published study that concludes that smells do increase in intensity, in patients who've undergone gastric bypass, so much that they actually became aversive. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6033408/

@happyhealthy, have you asked your doctor about this? Have you noticed any other side effects from the surgery?

Hi Happy Healthy!
You picked a great screen name now that you are on a journey to better health!
I did not have bypass. I was sleeved Oct. 21, 2016.....coming up on my 2 year surgiversary!
It is very common for your tastes to change after surgery. That is why when people are going for WLS, we suggest NOT stocking up on more than 1 week of supplies at a time because the change in your taste buds is almost immediate.
Many people never change back. So, things you once loved, you might hate. Even things you liked after surgery many turn your stomach!
As far as smells, that is new to me and I've dealt with lots of people.
It is important to be a part of a support group.
I admit I never looked into Mayo but I belong to Bariatric support for those over 50. Sorry, I don't know how old you are. If you are not quite that age, there are many other good ones.
I hope your journey is a smooth one!
Ronnie (GRANDMAr)

I experienced this years ago; not related to surgery. I leaned over and I could smell a swamp-like odor and when it happened in different places I realized it must be me! I had a sinus infection and the smell was the infection!
