Can gabapentin cause muscle pain and cramps in arms & legs?

Posted by sadeyes @sadeyes, Jan 28, 2020

Has anyone ever had the experience of Gabapentin causing severe muscle cramps in arms and legs and muscular pain and feeling of weakness? I know it is supposed to basically do the opposite and help with muscular problems......but this has happened twice to me as soon as I started the gaba and it was very severe,

I bought homeopathic #8 magnesium pills at whole foods and it works wonders for leg cramps. I had a misdiagnosed (by foot doc) numb foot for five years. The foot doc said I had over exercised doing sciatica exercises and that it would take a long long time to heal. Now my GP thinks I have neuropathy and has me on 600 mg. of Gabapentin. It seems to be helping with my sleep and my foot.

It was originally developed to help control seizures due to epilepsy. Then, researchers discovered that it could be used to help treat peripheral nerve pain. Both are nerve related.

Any chance you are taking this for Fibro? If so, can you share more about your experience with each drug, such as dose etc? I was recently diagnosed with Fibro and don't know what medication to start on for pain. I am afraid of taking anything that has serious withdrawal side effects but need to find something.

Several questions, hope that's ok. Did you start on a lower dose of Lyrica and work your way up to a higher dose? How long did you take it before it helped for pain relief? Do you still have some pain? How long have you been taking it? Any side effects? Regarding diet, did you go gluten free? Thanks.

I was on Gabapentin for many years and I developed a terrible pain in my right thigh.
When I stopped taking it the pain went away. In my case the Gabapentin was contributing at least to that pain. I was off it for awhile and I felt good after the initial withdrawal. (About 2 weeks) The withdrawal was not severe just mainly tiredness and some mental fog the first week or so. I actually felt pretty good off of it.
I developed another pain in my right arm which was severe so I had to start taking it again. I noticed that the pain would be worse at night and the Gabapentin would make in more intense. It didn’t really help at all so I’m cutting back and stopping again to see if the arm pain subsides.

Your best bet is to see a rheumatologist the Dr can advice you What med that is good for one person may not be for someone else .Dr started me on lower dose then increased it to what helped me . If Fibro is what you have you need to see Dr
