I'd like to start a discussion on fructose malabsorption, how to control it, what to eat and not eat, etc. . Is anybody interested?
Thank you all for this valuable information. The Mayo gastroenterologist did do a hydrogen breath test twice and confirmed SIBO both times. There was no mention of a fructose or lactose intolerance hydrogen breath test. There was no referral to a nutritionist either, only a recommendation to try pelvic therapy, which has been nonproductive after months of therapy.

Yes I find fructose & lactose really aggavate my IBS
Symptoms..is it a normal part of aging to develop intolerances such as gluten lactose ftuctose plus difficulty digesting fat because of a lack of digestive enzymes…Are all Seniors affected?
Maybe aging is part of it – our bodies slow down. The intolerances are caused by damage to the lining of the intestines; that is my understanding. Regarding digestive enzymes decreasing, that may be a part of aging. Have you asked your doctor for a prescription to Creon to help you digest the fats better? I take it and need it even though pancreas tests normal. Worth a try.
Everyone looses stomach acid as they age. Most likely enzymes too, but most Doctors do not specialize in that type of field, all they seem to care about is giving more prescriptions and telling their patients that they have IBS or FND (Functional Neurological Disorder)
Unfortunately we need to be our own advocate, read as much as possible and do our own research. That is the way it is in this new generation. I like the old ways when the Doctors actually cared and went out of their way to find a solution, not anymore, we are a number and a money machine for the Doctors.
Regarding doctors telling patients that they have IBS: I don’t disagree that this has probably become a catch all diagnosis when nothing else shows up during testing. But personally, I was relieved to get this diagnosis rather than continually not know month after month what was wrong with me. Has this completely solved my problems? No, but at least the Low Fodmap diet ( restrictive and unpleasant though it is) has helped somewhat.
The g.i. tract is a very complicated system and I think a big part of the problem is there is just a lot the doctors don't know yet. For example right now one of the big areas of research is the gut microbiome. It is not like a broken bone or something definitive. On the other hand, I also had the experience of a doctor who just wanted to do upper endoscopies and colonoscopies over and over, etc., and didn't say IBS or anything or didn't do any breath tests or anything. I had to go up to Mayo to get the fm diagnosis.
@jackiem95, @redhead63. Another thing. Since g.i. problems are so complex and not well understood, some doctors think the patient's problem is mainly mental. When you go up to Mayo for g.i. issues, they have you evaluated by a psychiatrist to check for mental issues. I passed the test, and my problems are physical, not mental. After I came back from Mayo and saw a physician's assistant, she said I just wanted attention and didn't really have much of a problem. I was quite annoyed. A big part of medical personnel thinking the problems are mental is that they haven't had the g.i. problems we do and don't know how horrible they can be. They don't realize how g.i. problems can hijack your life!
Yes. Was just going to ask the same. What can we do to control this crazy thing. I want to know how long you eat let’s say a half a banana which is not on the list but made me sick 6 hours later for 2 days make you sick? What symptoms do you have? What do you do for it? How can we not eat fruit for the rest of our lives? This is all new to me. I ate fruit all my life. Now the drs day I have fructose malabsorption and acid reflux. I feel sick almost every day. Can use advice on all fronts
Oh and I don’t have any symptoms of IBS no diarreah, constipation, gas just horrible heart burn and headaches and feeling overall sick. Lately getting laryngitis from it too.
I was a big fruit eater too; now I don't eat any. You get so you don't even want it because you know the symptoms it'll cause. You try to compensate by making what you do eat taste really good. Did you see the long part above (about page 3?) about recipes and diet? That might help.
