For those with pancan, did you drink lots of Diet Coke or Coke?

Posted by nvan22 @nvan22, Dec 21, 2023

I am very curious about finding out why people are getting pancan in what seems like record numbers.
My mom drank Coke daily she did up until she died of pancreatic cancer and it wasn’t hereditary. So for 45 years that’s what she did. I on the other hand drank Diet Coke for at least 20 years as a way to get energy I didn’t like coffee so would swing through McDonald’s daily and get Diet Coke. I then realized in my late forties early 50s how horrible it is for you and switched to water. I was so addicted it took like 2 yrs to be free of wanting a Diet Coke.
So in my heart I believe drinking Coke did a number on my pancreas and my moms. I want to help others if this is true. I am a very healthy person. Ate healthy exercised daily was never ever over weight. Never drank a lot never smoked. If you want please let me know what your history is with Coke or Diet Coke. It will help me understand this. Thanks!

Back to the question..
YES. Since high school, 55 years ago, I’ve enjoyed Coke, lots of it, … and then Tab, Diet Coke and now Coke Zero. I continue to do so.

It could be a factor in my pancan, perhaps one of many. Abundant alcohol and red meat have been a part of my life.

The idea that these three are at the root of my situation today fascinates me.

@fatherjonz It is more likely that the diet sodas are the culprit and not the ones with sugar. There is no proven link but it is well known that the Pancreas reacts more to diet sweeteners than to sugar and many people who drink large amounts of it suffer from repeated bouts of Pancreatitis. They are starting to think the repeated episodes of Pancreatitis may well lead to PC.

@leslie8080 Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. Where can I read that it is well known that the pancreas reacts more to diet sweeteners than to sugar and that many people who drink large amounts of it suffer from repeated bouts of pancreatitis? I have never heard of this. I am very interested in learning about it. Thank you. Do you have pancreatic cancer?

@tomrennie The site will not let me post a link to an article. No, I do not have PC, but I have known two people, one who died from it, and one who is battling it. The guy who is still battling it is in his late 50s and after chemo, when the surgeon went in to remove the tumor he had to remove the entire Pancreas because it was totally necrotic. He told the patient he had obviously had multiple bouts of Pancreatitis and talked about a link since this guy practically lives on diet soda. He said he has colleagues who believe the same. The man who died also went through cases of diet Snapple tea.

@leslie8080 Thanks for trying. I appreciate it. It was new to me, so I wanted to read up on it. Sorry to hear about the two people. Pancreatic cancer is a horrible disease. The more we learn about it, the better off we will be.

@tomrennie Do a search for "Do diet sweeteners cause the pancreas to react more than sugar" and "rise in glucose levels from use of artificial sweeteners". It is the rise in glucose levels which triggers insulin production.

I drank Diet Pepsi for years. Eventually switched to diet right. Probably the reason for pc

@leslie8080, I believe that this is the article you are referring to:
- Artificial sweetener may increase heart disease risk by triggering insulin surges https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/artificial-sweetener-triggers-insulin-spike-leading-to-blood-vessel-inflammation-in-mice

Please note that this research has been conducted in mice and human trials have not yet started. Artificial sweeteners are often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar. This research show that their impact on insulin dynamics and inflammation warrants further study.

@valerina30, it is tempting to draw straight line from "I did this and I got cancer." Cancer is often more complicated than that. There are some things known to cause cancer like aging, smoking, genetics, and more. All we can do is act on the things that we can control to reduce risk of cancer or of recurrence. Hugs to you.

Yes you’re right. I believe environmental and stress also plays a part

Only occasionally had a Coke or diet Coke so that is not how I got pancreatic cancer. I to have an aunt on my mom's side & a cousin on my dad's side that both died from pancreatic cancer.
