1 ReactionFor most of my life I've been trying to improve my brain functions.
It doesn't seem much different in my later 70s.
I'm still trying.

1 ReactionI'm always trying to make good use of my time and energy and there's a lot of room for me to do better, but I enjoy trying.
I don't feel there's much need to compare myself to myself of times past, or to others. That can be a waste of energy. This is a good place to practice forgiveness!
I usually know what it feels like when I'm trying well, difficult enough that I might learn to do better, not so hard that I'll frustrate and injure myself. That's enough to give me some satisfaction in my use of the moment.
And a sense that maybe I'm still growing and learning, doing a better job of using whatever neurons I have left. Every time you use a neuron, you increase it's chances of surviving!

And the hard part is mental exercise think, read, do crosswords. Am I smarter? Not sure but my focus and memory are better and I am calmer. I am not a doctor and not recommending people do the same but has helped me.

4 ReactionsI use as my mantra, "Treat yourself like a beloved friend." Thank you, David Burns from Feeling Good. My therapist had me read it. Helped me get through it. That book changed my life.

Amen to that!
Pablo Casals, was asked why, in his nineties, did he continue to practice cello every day.
He replied: "Because I believe I'm making progress."
