First Visit questions - extra tests and prior auths

Posted by jojo940 @jojo940, 14 hours ago

I am scheduled for my first appointments with basic testing, some of which I have done before at other facilities. I have a complex history with multiple complaints. My referral to Mayo was labelled "Constipation". Technically correct -BMs only every 2 wks, blockages etc. But theres WAY more to it than that. Polyposis, cancerous mass, surgeries with complications. Lack of proper testing. I have no knowledge of what Mayo knows besides I have constipation. I got prior auth- but only for the tests lists in my app notice, which are basic. I have in mind what tests I hope they offer once I give the full story.

How can I speak to my team/ask for tests/get prior auth for them before I go? I don't want to get there and find they didn't know about the cancer stuff and want to do way more tests but we need prior auth.

Welcome to Mayo Connect. Did you send Mayo your medical records? If so, the providers will review and know your medical history. If you have not sent your medical records, you should call Mayo and ask about sending records prior to your appointment.

In addition, have you created a sign-on for your Patient Portal? There will probably be questionnaires about your medical history and symptoms to fill out prior to the appointment. If questionnaires are not available yet, check closer to your appointment.

Regarding your questions about prior authorization for additional scheduled tests, make sure you have your insurance contact information with you. In addition, this website has contact information to contact account services if you have any questions: https://www.mayoclinic.org/billing-insurance/contact-us
Sometimes, prior authorization cannot be determined until the provider actually orders tests. And that might only happen till your first appointment with the provider.

What Mayo location are you visiting?

Gather all of your records that you can locate or print out and organize
them chronologically.Records on EPIC and My Charts should not be a problem. Private office records are more of a problem and may require your
personal release. Most specialties will have a fax number for you to forward important procedures and reports of you have copies. I used my public library
to help there. The portal is your key and the clinic can organize them.
