Has anyone had any success treating filamentary keratitis? If so, what has worked ? And names of doctors and sources of information that have been useful?

When were you diagnosed?

I use Mucomyst eye drops. Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic (medicine that destroys or dissolves mucus). It is usually given by inhalation but may be given in other ways in a hospital.

I have to have it made at a compounding pharmacy. It comes frozen, and once defrosted, it’s only good for 30 days. I’ve used for 2 episodes of
filamentary keratitis. I see a cornea specialist at UT Knoxville. I wish you well.

Filamentary keratitis
What has worked best for me:

- punctual plugs were effective for many year. Now they won’t stay in ( I have tried different ones and different sizes ) maybe due to aging and less elastic skin

- PREVENTION (a lot easier to keep them away than trying to fight them after they develop!) : limiting screen time, wear wrap around glasses with seals when in the wind, dirt, car with heat or air conditioning. If my eyes are STARTING to feel dry or irritated, immediately INCREASE treatment

TREATMENT (EVERYDAY as prevention and INCREASE when they do develop )
- Moist warm eye compresses held closely to eyes. 5 to 15 minutes. 3 or 4 times a day

- platelet rich plasma (PRP) eye drops - similar to autologous serum eye drops but more effective for me

- Miebo prescription eye drops
