Fiducial markers implant and SpaceOar Gel

Posted by mikewo @mikewo, Mar 24, 2023

Just had my markers put in and my SpaceOar gel inserted. It was a piece of cake so far and no feeling of fullness in the bowel at all. I was expecting to feel it or know it was there but nothing at all.

My dr must be really good, feels like nothing was done, so grateful to be at Mayo.

My husband had this done. After a few weeks he starting having pressure pain in his rectum. Radiologist said the spaceoar gel slipped down which is causing the pain.

It will be two weeks on the 5/10/23 since my last of 5 radiation sessions and so far so good. Slight pinkish discharge before a bowel movement but nothing during or after. No urinary problems at all. Good luck to you husband and it should go away as it dissolves and is absorbed.

Just wondering why I don’t feel the heaviness they said I’d feel.

I guess everyone is different as my prostate is very large so maybe the gel is spread out in a thinner layer as they use the same quantity on everyone unlike the new gel that is just coming out.

I guess cause it was done correctly. I didn’t notice anything after I had it done.

I had the SpaceOAR insertion at Mayo Rochester (late Jan 2020). I didn't particularly feel any discomfort during or after.
I live in a small community (about 100,000) and I was surprised to hear from a fellow PCa guy that he was told that SpaceOar is only done quarterly in our community when the two urologists get enough patients and a rep from the SpaceOAR company can come. Since I think these urologists are competent it was surprising to think they had to wait for a company rep to come. May speak to the benefits of getting treatment in a facility that does enough SpaceOAR insertions to not need/want a company rep to be present...

I had spaceoar done last year. I felt nothing. No issues. There was a technician from spaceoar in the operating room as well. On the spaceoar website, https://www.spaceoar.com/find-a-doctor/, doctors that have a higher level of experience with spaceoar are described as "SpaceOAR Hydrogel Center of Excellence". They are searchable on the site.

Had my fiducials inserted yesterday. The whole procedure took less than 20 minutes. The only soreness is at the spot on my behind where I received an antibiotic injection. No observed urinary bleeding or otherwise. Piece of cake. Next up is the SpaceOAR procedure next week.

I also had a small ulcer. Are you doing it again or doing balloon or doing without any protection?

Good luck. My SpaceOAR gel placement failed last year. It created a delay in treatment. Anyway...my proton treatments will be over come May 16. 20 treatments.

Good luck. I also had no issues, but the placement failed. It added a delay in my treatment. Anyway...May 16 is my last proton treatment.
